Set in Hollywood, this novel is going to be one dazzling and delightful ride
Sutton Foster fans, we have some exciting news to share! The 50-year-old actress was recently named the narrator for Alchemy of Secrets, the first novel written for adults by bestselling YA romantasy (romantic fantasy) author Stephanie Garber. To celebrate this news, we at Woman’s World have rounded up everything we know about the audiobook and the novel, including when you can expect to listen or pick up a copy later this year. Read on for more.
What to know about Sutton Foster’s audiobook narration
On Monday, August 11, Flatiron Books/Macmillan Audio announced that Foster, best known for her work on Broadway and her roles on the TV shows Younger and Bunheads, would be the narrator on Garber’s upcoming novel, Alchemy of Secrets.
“I’ve been a devoted fan of Stephanie Garber’s incredible storytelling for years; she crafts these worlds you just ache to get lost in,” the actress said in a press release. “It’s such a thrill and a genuine honor to be asked to narrate Alchemy of Secrets.”
Following that, Garber took to social media to share her excitement for this casting decision.
“I can’t wait for everyone to hear this audiobook!” the #1 New York Times bestselling author wrote on Instagram. “I’m listening now and she did the most amazing job!”

This isn’t Foster’s first time stepping into the audiobook narrator role. In the past she has narrated The Summer Place and That Summer, both written by Jennifer Weiner, in addition to Jessica Knoll’s Bright Young Women, Betsy-Tacy by Maud Hart Lovelace, Magic Lessons by Alice Hoffman and Older by Pamela Redmond Satran—which is a part of the Younger series that inspired Foster’s hit TV show.
She also wrote and narrated her own memoir, Hooked: How Crafting Saved My Life, back in 2021.
“It’s a book about a lot more than crocheting — it’s about mental health, it’s about dealing with stress and anxiety and life, and it’s about finding comfort and strength in crafting,” the two-time Tony Award winner wrote on Instagram at the time. “Thanks for following along and I hope my story is helpful with all the challenges you are working through too.”
What is ‘Alchemy of Secrets’ about?
Alchemy of Secrets follows Holland St. James, who always believed that magic was real, and after meeting someone called the the Watch Man, who can supposedly tell you when you will die, that belief is further elevated — especially after he tells her she’s going to die at midnight unless she finds the magical Alchemical Heart. Soon, Holland finds herself immersed in the ever-changing magical world of Los Angeles, California, alongside a stranger who might be using her. What follows is a battle of love, strength and living life to the fullest.
“The vibe of this book is dark academia meets old Hollywood. Which is what we tried to capture in the beautiful limited edition gold foil designs that are hidden underneath the dust jackets,” Garber wrote on Instagram. “I’ve seen some comments where people are saying this book is historical but it’s NOT historical. Alchemy of Secrets is set in the present day.”

“Readers have also been asking about the romance in this book and there is definitely romance. I haven’t said much about the romance because I don’t want to spoil anything. But, if you like the romance in my other novels then I’m hopeful you’ll enjoy this as well.”
Prior to this, Garber wrote the Young Adult Caraval and Once Upon a Broken Heart series, both of which were huge bestsellers.
‘Alchemy of Secrets’ release date
Both the hardcover and audio version of Alchemy of Secrets will be available for purchase where books are sold on Tuesday, October 7.
