Anyone who has watched Taylor Sheridan’s Texas based oil drama Landman knows that Ali Larter is the definition of a screenstealer. From her unforgettable one-liners to her stunning outfits, she truly made the show a national treasure. But when she’s not filming, what does Larter do? And before she headed down to Texas, what was she in? We look into Larter’s career and personal life below.

The early days of Ali Larter

Larter was born on February 28, 1976 in Cherry Hill Township, New Jersey. She began modeling at a young age, and even chose to drop out of high school to pursue it full time. During that time she also took an interest in acting, with her first credit being a single episode of Suddenly Susan in 1997.

From there, she continued to have small roles in things like Dawson’s Creek (1998), Varsity Blue (1999) and Drive Me Crazy (1999), but it was the 2001 film Legally Blonde that really put her on the map.

Legally Blonde follows a fashionista named Elle Woods (Reese Witherspoon) after she decides to go to Harvard Law to try and get her boyfriend back. While there she ends up defending Brooke Taylor Windham (Larter), who is on trial for murdering her husband. Legally Blonde went on to have a sequel in 2003 and, despite not being in it, Larter has high hopes for a potential third film.

“I have not heard a thing. I mean, we all hope. Who knows where it will go?” she told InStyle magazine earlier this year. “We’re kind of aging up, so I don’t know. Maybe Michelle [Randolph, who plays her daughter in Landman] will be playing me soon.”

Life after ‘Legally Blonde’

After Legally Blonde, Larter continued acting in things like Heroes (2006 to 2010), Legends (2014), The Rookie (2019 to 2020) and The Hater (2022). But, it wasn’t until she landed the role of Angela Norris in Landman back in 2024 that people really began to know who she was.

“I get to play a character who is incredibly alive. She’s fiery and loves to break the rules, but has the capability to be incredibly vulnerable at times. Landman is not easy, but my God, it is fulfilling,” Larter told Collider earlier this year. “Angela is not letting go easily. You’ll see how that transpires. If we’re lucky enough to do a third season, we will dig into the Norris family dynamic now: Tommy [Billy Bob Thorton] and Angela are back together, but the kids are living their own lives.”

The role isn’t within controversy, though, since many viewers think that Angela is almost too sexualized and not an accurate representation of who women really are.

“There’s good press and bad press. That’s challenging. I try to keep myself at arm’s length from that and stay with the work. This is Taylor’s  [Sheridan] baby. Anytime I would take my foot off the pedal, Taylor was on step. He wants her to be loud and emotional, like a tornado of energy. The way he envisioned this show is that it has so many tones,” Larter told The Hollywood Reporter in June of this year.  “There are so many different parts of this show, and I think what has connected with audiences is that all these tones work together in Taylor’s vision. In the first season, we didn’t know if that was going to work. And I saw his vision unfold.”

“If I didn’t have the really grounded moments with Billy [Bob Thornton] it would be a different show for me,” she continued. “That would be just one side, but this character is a full rainbow. I have so many parts of myself that I can put into her. She wants to be flashy in a bikini and be all hot, and then you see her crumbling, trying to keep her family together. You see her battling and feeling like she’s getting older. Then you see her finding her calling and going to this old folks’ home and giving these people hope to live and bringing joy into their life. It’s very multi-dimensional, and that’s why it doesn’t bother me. You can do all of it. I just go to the material and find it within my work.”

Ali Larter’s personal life

Larter has been married to husband Hayes MacArthur since 2008 and have since welcomed two kids together. They currently live in Idaho.

We fell in love with the beauty of the mountains and their quiet grandness,” Larter told Rue Magazine in September 2024. “People look out for each other. There’s a real sense of community here, and we’re so happy to be a part of it.”
