Meet the Real-Life Spouses of the ‘Back to the Future’ Cast—From Michael J. Fox to Christopher Lloyd
One of them has been married five times—find out who!
The cast of Back to the Future might not need a Delorean to travel back in time and master their love lives because, as it turns out, many of them are happily married and have been for quite a while. Some of them, like Michael J. Fox and Lea Thompson, met their spouses on set, but others, such as Christoper Lloyd, had to try a few times before meeting the love of his life. For more on these relationships and who the rest of the cast is spending their time traveling days with, keep scrolling!
Michael J. Fox
It seems that Marty McFly was super fly in real life, too, because the actor has been married to Tracy Pollan since 1988.
They met in 1985 on the Family Ties set, but didn’t start dating until 1987 when they reunited on the set of Bright Lights, Big City. A year later, the two got married in Vermont, with Fox saying, “Inside, it was like anybody else’s wedding. It was a house party. We rolled back the rugs and danced the night away. You’ve got everyone in the world that you love in a one-acre area, and five idiots are flying over your head.”
“You can’t let kids run down the street because there are people with cameras there, grabbing them and pumping them and scaring them.”

In 1989, the two welcomed their first child, a son named Sam Michael. They had two years with him before Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson’s—although he didn’t publicly announce it until 1998.
The disease didn’t slow him down, though, because four years later, the couple welcomed their twin girls, Aquinnah Kathleen and Schuyler Frances, in 1995.
In 2000, Fox and Pollan created the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, a foundation dedicated to fighting the disease. It has since raised over $1 billion to help fund Parkinson’s research.
“What I am most proud of is the way we have galvanized this community. We can get stuff done,” Fox said of his foundation’s work. “If we can find ways to identify the condition before it’s evident. If we could take a piece of hair and find it, then we could treat it prophylactically, and then maybe you don’t get it.”
Fox and Pollan welcomed their final child, a girl named Esmé Annabelle, in 2001. Since then, the two have continued to earn money for their foundation, raise their children and walk various red carpets together.

“I love Tracy, obviously, and she’s an amazing person and has gone through a lot,” Fox said in April 2024. “I realize she has a life separate from me having Parkinson’s, from me being Alex Keaton or Marty McFly. She’s a person. I think that’s why it’s gone okay.”
“It’s great having a partner and having someone that knows you in a [certain] way when everyone in the world thinks they know you. [Only] one person actually knows you.”
Christopher Lloyd
Dr. Emmett Brown might have only had his dog Einstein (until he met Mary Steenburgen’s Clara in Back to the Future Part III), but it turns out Christopher Lloyd was not in the same boat. The actor has been married five times over the course of his life, most recently in 2016.
From 1959 until 1971, Lloyd was married to Catherine Boyd. She is a relatively unknown actress, and the details surrounding their marriage have remained a mystery.
Then, in 1974, Lloyd married Kay Tornborg, the two remaining together until 1987. Like Boyd, Tornborg is a relatively unknown actress whose relationship with Lloyd has never been discussed publicly.
Right after splitting from Tornborg, Lloyd married another little-known actress, named Carol Ann Vanek, in 1988. They were together until 1991, before divorcing. This was the actor’s shortest union to date.

For his fourth marriage, Lloyd decided to take a break from actresses and married a writer named Jane Walker Wood instead. They tied the knot in 1992 and were together until 2005. The details surrounding their split remain unclear.
Following that, Lloyd didn’t get married again until 2016, when he and Lisa Loiacono said “I Do.” They met in 2012 when she sold the actor his house.
“Five is the last,” Lloyd said in 2021. “We have dinners at home; Lisa prepares wonderful food.”
The pair is still together today and often gush about each other on social media. However, despite all of his marriages, Lloyd never had kids.
Lea Thompson

Despite what her character Lorraine did in the film—some of it unknowingly questionable— Lea Thompson married director Howard Deutch in 1989 after meeting him on the set of Some Kind of Wonderful, which Thompson starred in and Deutch directed.
“The opening of Some Kind of Wonderful is just so exquisite,” Thompson said. “The way my husband put together that whole montage that sets up the whole story, it’s just so beautifully done.“
The couple has two children, both of whom are actresses. They are still going strong today.
Thomas F. Wilson

It’s a well-known fact that no one likes Biff, but actor Thomas F. Wilson is a completely different story. The actor has been married to his wife, Caroline, since 1985, and they have four children together.
The couple has chosen to keep their private lives private for the most part, but they do appear on red carpets together from time to time.
