He’s considered the greatest songwriter of all time, and some might consider him the greatest father as well. While he led a massively successful music career, Bob Dylan was also busy being a father to his six children: Maria, Jesse, Anna, Sam, Jakob and Desiree.
His five eldest kids were welcomed with first wife Sara Dylan, whom the musician was married to from 1965 until 1977. His sixth child, Desiree, was the daughter of the singer and second wife Carolyn, whom he was married to from 1986 until 1992. Meet the six children of Bob Dylan.
Maria Dylan Himmelman
Dylan’s oldest child is his daughter Maria Dylan Himmelman, who was born to his first wife, Sara, and her first husband Hans Lownds. Maria was born on October 21, 1961, and was adopted by Dylan after he tied the knot with Sara in 1965.
Maria is a poet who has been published in a number of different magazines but has largely stayed out of the spotlight otherwise. In 1988, she married musician Peter Himmelman, with whom she had four children.
Jesse Byron Dylan
The musician’s second eldest child was son Jesse Byron Dylan, who was the first biological child of Dylan and Sara. Following his January 6, 1966 birth, Dylan took a break from music to shelter his child from the public.
Jesse went on to become a film director, known for movies including How High (2001), American Wedding (2003), Kicking & Screaming (2005) and Soros (2019). He married actress Susan Traylor, and the couple welcomed two children together: son Pablo in 1995 and daughter Feury in 2000.
Anna Dylan
The singer’s third child was daughter Anna Dylan, who he welcomed with his wife Sara. Anna was born on July 11, 1967. She, too, has kept her life out of the public eye and not much is known about her.
Sam Dylan
The fourth child of Bob and Sara Dylan was their son, Sam, who was born on July 30, 1968. Sam is married to his wife, Stacy, who he met in 1988, according to an Instagram post. The couple have two children together, sons Jonah and Lowell.
Jakob Luke Dylan
On December 9, 1969, the Dylans welcomed their fifth child, Jakob Luke Dylan, who, like his father, went on to pursue music. In 1989, Jakob joined the musical group The Wallflowers, and they released a number of songs, including the Grammy-winning “One Headlight.”
Bob shared the fears he felt of his son entering the music industry, explaining, “I worried about him when he started out. I just didn’t want to see him get roughed up. This business can throw you into deep water.”
In 1992, Jakob tied the knot with wife Paige, and the two have welcomed four children together.
Desiree Gabrielle Dennis-Dylan

Dylan’s youngest child is daughter Desiree Gabrielle Dennis-Dylan, who was born to the musician and his backup singer, Carolyn Dennis, on January 31, 1986, the same year the couple married.
Desiree’s identity wasn’t revealed to the public for 15 years and neither was Dylan’s marriage to Carolyn, whom he divorced in 1992. The revelation was made in the biography Down the Highway, which also claimed that Dylan had been “hiding his daughter.” Carolyn, however, disputed this, saying that her father would never neglect or hide his daughter.
She, too, has entered the entertainment industry, appearing in shows such as Modern Family (2019), Perfect Harmony (2019-2020) and NCIS (2020).
