Her striking beauty, comedic wit and deadpan delivery are just a few pieces of the pie that make up Kat Dennings, and over the years, she’s proven just how far her range really is. Dennings has had great success over the years with various television roles, but some of her big-screen accomplishments have garnered cult followings as well. These days, she’s showing her stuff alongside television icon Tim Allen in their new sitcom Shifting Gears. Here, get to know Kat Dennings.

Kat Dennings’ early life and career

Like many other young actors, Dennings got her start in commercials, but her first real role was in none other than an episode of Sex and the City. Soon after, she had a starring role in the early 2000s sitcom Raising Dad opposite Bob Saget. Despite her success on the screen as a youngster, Dennings remembers that the culture back then was far different from what it is today.

The time that I was auditioning and starting to act, it was a very different environment than it is now,” she recently told PEOPLE. “There was not a lot of inclusivity at all. It was very harsh. There was a lot of extremely negative feedback and people would not hold back.” She continued to explain instances that she can still remember to this day. “I was 12. I’d go into an audition and I’d do it, and my manager would call me and I’d be like, ‘How’d it go?’ And they’d be like, ‘Well, they thought you weren’t pretty enough and you’re fat.’”

Luckily, Dennings wasn’t deterred, and since those early days breaking out into the industry, the 39-year-old actress has certainly recognized her worth. Over the years, you could catch her making appearances in shows like Without a Trace, CSI: NY, ER and movies such as The 40-Year-Old-Virgin (2005), Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist (2008) and countless others, but perhaps her most notable role was in the hit sitcom 2 Broke Girls, where she starred as beloved waitress Max.

Dennings’ 2 Broke Girls run was a major success. Her hilarious charm worked alongside the crew of characters that brought this show to life, and the series aired from 2011 to 2017. The show, which was left on a bit of a cliffhanger, came to its end on an abrupt note. “It was a really special time,” Dennings told the Associated Press of her time on the series. As for whether she’d be interested in a reboot, the actress said she’d “be open to it.” After 2 Broke Girls, you could catch her shining in series like Dollface and WandaVision.

Though Dennings has hung up her waitress uniform, she’s back on the sitcom scene in her series Shifting Gears. Tim Allen stars as the owner of a classic car shop who gets the shock of a lifetime when his estranged daughter returns with her two kids in tow, looking for a place to stay until she gets back on her feet. The unique family dynamics and eccentric crew of characters at the helm of this series have already made it a fan favorite, and Dennings is enjoying the journey so far.

Tim and I have such a fantastic relationship that we can really balance each other out in all these scenes, and we know what to do with them, so that it’s still fun,” Dennings told Collider. “We all have a family member or a friend or somebody at work that we just cannot agree with, but we love them anyway. It’s like, ‘Let’s not start this conversation.’ We all have that. It is a very relatable situation and there’s just endless potential for comedy with that kind of thing. Hopefully, we get many, many seasons to do it. That’s what I hope.”
