Lisa Ann Walter talks ‘Abbott Elementary’ Season 6
Abbott Elementary is an award-winning comedy that follows a group of educators at a Philadelphia school that the series takes its name from. Walter plays Melissa Schemmenti, a second-grade turned middle school teacher who has a bit of an edge to her.
“I’m the daughter of a teacher. I’m the mother of a teacher,” Walter tells Woman’s World. “I play a teacher on TV, and we are aware that teachers are… I don’t want to say suffering because the reason teachers go into the profession is because they love it. They know that they make a difference. They probably, like all the rest of us, have had a teacher in their life that has meaningfully changed the course of their lives or believed in them in some way. But it’s a struggle. It’s a financial struggle. They don’t get paid what they should.”

As for what fans can expect from the show’s forthcoming sixth season, Walter said she has no idea because “they don’t tell me.”
“They could tell me because I don’t have a big fat mouth. I’m Sicilian. I would keep it to myself,” she laughs. “Sheryl, I’m not so sure. She would blow it, 100 percent. And the reason is not because she wants to get one over on anybody, she would just forget that she wasn’t supposed to say that part. That’s what she would do.”
Lisa Ann Walter reveals if her and Sheryl Lee Ralph are really friends
On screen, Walter and Lee Ralph’s characters are best friends, but is the situation the same off camera? Walter says it “100 percent is.”
“She [Lee Ralph] was in New York at the same time I was here doing the Heathers musical. She was shooting a movie. All of my cast mates from Abbott came down to see me earlier in the run, and then they came to my party to celebrate my Hulu comedy special right after they came to the show. It was a wonderful night,” the actress explains. “Sheryl unfortunately couldn’t make it because she was shooting the Lin Manuel Miranda musical Octet, which I can say because they’ve broken that news. So she came later in the run. She came just before it ended with her husband, and then she came to my apartment where I was living here in New York, and I made her Italian food. And her husband loves my Italian food, so we had a nice dinner.”
Walter also shared that while Abbott Elementary might not be shooting right now, she and Lee Ralph have continued to keep in touch.

“We’ve been talking a lot, actually, since we both stopped working on our hiatus projects because now we have time. She keeps sending me pictures of all the places she’s going to in Paris and going to Fashion Week and now she’s going to Greece, and I was in Europe for a little bit, so we’re comparing notes,” Walter shares. “She could not be where I was. I was in Scotland—hat’s way too cold for her. She wants it to be 100 degrees. They had a heat wave in France when she was there, and I was, like, ‘Girl, are you okay?’ She was, like, ‘Girl, you know that’s my perfect weather.’”
