Key Takeaways

  • Luke Grimes and his family live full time in Montana, just like his 'Marshals' character Kayce.
  • Grimes says welcoming son Rigel in 2024 brought him and wife Bianca even closer together.
  • Grimes says his son has already influenced the music on his debut self-titled album.

If you’ve watched the new Yellowstone spinoff Marshals, then you probably know that a lot of the storylines revolve around Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) and his son Tate (Brecken Merrill). They deal with grief, love, death and danger all while living in the middle of nowhere Montana. And as it turns out, that’s how Luke’s real life looks, too. Not only do he and his son Rigel Randolph Grimes live in Montana, but they’ve also dealt with the drama and danger that comes with that. Below, we look at how exactly Luke and his son navigate Montana living.

Get to know Luke Grimes’ son

Luke and wife Bianca Rodrigues Grimes welcomed their son Rigel into the world back in 2024. He’s the couple’s only child, as of right now and, according to the actor, their lives changed for the better the day he was born.

“Man, having my baby has changed everything in every way possible,” Grimes told People magazine in November 2024. “I think people talk about your heart expanding a little bit every day, and it’s so true. It’s like there’s a love growing inside of me that I didn’t know I was capable of, and it’s incredible and it’s scary because you have so much more skin in the game. You know what I mean?”

Luke also told the outlet that their son “brought me and my wife close in a way that I didn’t know we could be. There’s another level in the way that we love each other and how we have to be a team for this little guy.”

Where do Luke Grimes and his son live?

Even though Luke is a Hollywood icon, he and his family do reside in Montana full time. They made that decision while Luke was still filming Yellowstone, and according to the actor, their neighbors aren’t super welcoming. “I can’t go to bars there anymore ‘cause whoever that one idiot is, is at the bar, and he can’t wait to start a fight with me. Just like I can’t wait to do it because it’s like a win-win for him, you know? He gets to sue me or something. I don’t know, but it’s a lose-lose for me,” Grimes said on Joe Rogan Experience in March of this year.

“The valley that I live in, we had some people come visit us,” the actor continued. “Our friends from California drove out, we went on a hike and we were in their car. And they had, you know, Cali plates. We got off the hike, and someone had written ‘go back’ in the dust on their car. Like, people are super weird about it. So I don’t tell anyone exactly where I’m at because they would get really mad at me.”

Even so, Luke and his family love it. Except when cowboy hats are involved. “My son thinks my cowboy hat is really funny,” Grimes told People in February 2026. “He doesn’t understand why I have that big thing on my head, but he loves it.”

How Luke Grimes’ son impacted his career

Most people know Luke from Yellowstone, but when he’s not acting, he can often be found singing. According to him, in fact, his son heavily impacted his first album, Luke Grimes.

“Hopefully the music doesn’t become this sort of cheesy love fest [now],” he joked to People in 2024. “But I’ve got to be honest with how I feel and we will see what comes out of that.”
