Not everyone gets a second chance at love—but Irish actor Pierce Brosnan, 72, counts his lucky stars that he found magic again with his wife, Keely Shaye Brosnan, after suffering a heartbreak like no other. In 1980, Brosnan married Australian actress Cassandra Harris after meeting through a mutual friend. While together, they welcomed a son named Sean, and Brosnan additionally adopted her two children from a previous marriage when their father had passed. In 1987, Harris was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, and in 1991, she tragically passed away after a long hard fight, rocking her family’s world.
“There is an incredible cruelty in it all,” Brosnan shared with People back in 1992, a few short months after losing his wife, “losing a person you shared everything with. This is the first time in my life I’ve ever experienced bereavement, and it’s overwhelming.” Though the loss was devastating, the actor remembered his wife fondly, saying, “She has made me the man I am, the actor I am, the father I am. She’s forever embedded in every fiber of my being. She’s there with me every day. I was so blessed to have met someone like that.”
Though this tragedy altered the actor’s life as he knew it, a few years after Brosnan and his family said goodbye to Cassandra, he would meet the woman who would give him another shot at happiness. How did Pierce Brosnan meet his wife?
Pierce and Keely first crossed paths when they met in Mexico. Though her resume includes things like actress and model, she eventually would tack journalist onto the list, and it was while working as a television correspondent that fate brought her and her future husband together. In 2001, after a few years of dating, the duo made things official and tied the knot—and they’ve been happily together ever since!
Since getting together, this lovely husband and wife have welcomed two sons, and after over three decades together, it’s safe to say they’re doing something right! “Keely and I, it’ll be 31 years here soon. And it’s all gone by in the blink of an eye, the speed of a flame,” the MobLand actor recently told Fox News Digital. “We like each other, and we have wonderful sons, and we have a creative life. It’s always about solving problems and how you solve the problems and how can you deal with them, and the stresses and strains of life.”
From gushing over one another in interviews to sharing the love they have for each other on social media posts, it’s clear that that fateful night in Mexico was pure kismet for the lovely duo. “Happy 23rd anniversary my darling Keely, my beautiful brown eyed girl, my north, my south, my east and west,” the Bond portrayer wrote in the caption of an Instagram post last year. “All my love, should I fall behind, wait for me.”
As for Keely, the love she has for her husband is abundant as well! “Happy Anniversary my love @piercebrosnanofficial,” she wrote in the caption of her Instagram anniversary post last year. “Here’s to the next 23 years together. May they continue to be creative, adventurous, loving, inspiring, and joyful. Time flies on love’s wings.” Wishing these two nothing but continued joy and happiness!
