Key Takeaways

  • 'Bake Off' star Prue Leith, 86, rejects restrictive fad diets and complicated aging rules.
  • Her 3-step longevity formula simply requires women to eat well, sleep well and love well.
  • Getting 8 hours of sleep and finding daily purpose are her keys to staying sharp and vibrant.

At 86, Prue Leith isn’t slowing down—she’s judging baking competitions, writing books and savoring every bite along the way. And when asked how she keeps her spark alive, the beloved Great British Bake Off judge doesn’t point to pricey supplements, fad diets or punishing workouts. Her recipe for a long, vibrant life comes down to three beautifully simple ingredients: eat well, sleep well and love well.

“If I have to take a guess at what gives me the life I’ve had, it’s that I sleep well, I eat well,” Leith said. “I eat everything, I eat absolutely everything.”

In a wellness world full of complicated rules, her down-to-earth wisdom feels like a deep breath of fresh air.

Eat well—and eat everything

For Leith, eating well has nothing to do with restriction or the latest trendy diet. It’s about variety, quality and genuine joy at the table.

“It’s a hugely varied diet, and it’s a healthy one, and it’s good food,” she said. “I can afford to buy a good chicken rather than one that’s traveled halfway around the world and spent the last two years in a freezer. I am lucky enough to have to afford to buy the best ingredients, and we eat very simply, but we eat really well.”

It’s a refreshing counterpoint to today’s restrictive eating culture. Leith’s approach suggests that a long, vibrant life isn’t about cutting things out—it’s about putting good things in.

Sleep like it’s your superpower

The second pillar of Leith’s longevity recipe is rest—and on this one, she sounds genuinely blessed.

“I can just fall asleep wherever I’ve got an extra half an hour on a train and nothing to do. I’ll just go to sleep,” she said. “When I go to sleep at night, I think, right, I’ve got eight hours and I put my head on the pillow and I’m out.”

Eight hours of uninterrupted sleep? For many women, that sounds like a dream—especially as we get older and racing thoughts, hot flashes or aching joints get in the way. But research has long connected consistent, quality sleep to better cognitive function, a stronger immune system and a healthier heart.

Love well, in every way

The third ingredient in Leith’s recipe may be the most expansive of all—and the most beautiful. For Leith, “loving well” goes far beyond romance. It includes passion, purpose and a deep engagement with the world around her.

“I love well, and that doesn’t just mean loving John,” she said, referring to her husband. “I think it is wonderful if you have a partner who lights up your life and it is generally a proper help because he is, but I think if I say sleep, eat, sleep, and love—the love bit also encompasses a love of anything.”

“You’ve got to have a reason to get up in the morning,” she said. “You’ve got to love your life, really.”

Leith’s continued work clearly gives her that spark. But the principle stretches to all of us. Whether it’s grandchildren, gardening, your church community, a favorite novel or Sunday dinners with the family, having something—and someone—to love appears to be a powerful ingredient in a well-lived life.

A recipe any of us can follow

What makes Leith’s advice feel so welcome is how doable it is. She isn’t selling a product, pushing a supplement or promoting an extreme lifestyle. She’s describing habits that, while not always easy, are within reach for most of us.

Eat real food. Get enough sleep. Find things—and people—to love.

It’s a recipe as straightforward as a perfectly roasted chicken—and at 86, Prue Leith is living proof that the simplest approaches often deliver the most delicious results.
