I fell 25 feet, hit my head and then wood came down and hit my head, and then my head hit the stage again,” he revealed to the outlet. “I thought I had just broken my wrist, but on the scan I found out I have some brain damage from the fall, so I’m working on trying to repair that.” This revelation was likely a shock to the singer, however, Springfield affirms that he isn’t the type of person to brush off his health and hope for the best. In fact, he would much rather be made aware of what was going on within his body.

How Rick Springfield’s father’s death inspired his health journey

A lot of this desire ties back to the experience he had witnessing the health of his father. “My dad died from not wanting to know,” he said. “He thought he had stomach cancer for years and never got it checked out. When he finally collapsed one day at home, they found out it was an ulcer that burst, and he died from the loss of blood. It could have been fixed if he had gotten it checked out.” The impact of Springfied’s father on his life was significant, with the musician even penning the heartfelt tune “My Father’s Chair” in his honor. “35 years ago today my Dad left us for the great unknown,” Springfield wrote in a social media tribute to him back in 2016. “It still can hurt and also empower me. Like it did that day 35 years ago. Love to my old mum for hanging in there too. You are our champ!”

His father’s death was not only impactful in terms of the loss he felt, but also served as a wake-up call regarding his own health. “That was a giant message to me: If you want to live long, you have to be prepared for some bad news now and then,” he stated. “I could find out I have terminal cancer tomorrow and be dead in a year, but I can only do all I can do.” With that in mind, Springfield has no intention of slowing down, especially as he prepares for his upcoming tour.
