Elliott was born on August 9, 1944, but didn’t begin acting until 1967. Following that, he went onto have several small roles in projects like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), the original TV version of Mission: Impossible (1970 to 1971), Frogs (1972) and The Blue Knight (1973) before landing the role of Rick in Lifeguard (1976), which many people consider to be his breakout film.

“It was about a guy who was at a point in his life that he had to make up his mind about what he wanted to do: be a lifeguard or get a real job,” Elliott told Business Insider in June of 2017. “When the marketing campaign came out, I was on the road for a long time and every time we’d go into a city and start an interview, people would [begin] by saying, ‘This movie is nothing like I expected it to be,’ based on the marketing, and we would go into this long discussion about the f-ck-ng marketing. It was never positive.”

What was positive, though, was Elliott’s rise to stardom, because life never seemed to slow down for the actor after that. He appeared in movies like Mask (1985), Road House (1989), The Big Lebowski (1998) and We Were Soldiers (2002). He also worked with several A-Listers, Cher and Eric Stoltz, his co-stars in Mask, among them.

“I was a Cher fan when I was still living in Portland,” Elliott said in 2019, per Entertainment Weekly. “My mom and I were there, and I was going to school, and my dad had died, but my mom and I used to watch The Sonny and Cher Show religiously. I’ve always had a thing for female singers, for whatever reason. I remember Eric Stoltz sat in that makeup chair for four hours-plus every day. Ate all of his meals out of a f-ck-ng straw and never once complained about it. We shot in the middle of the summer. It was brutal for him. Never complained once, that I ever heard.”

Sam Elliott becomes a cowboy

Throughout his career Elliott appeared in a few different Western films, but it wasn’t until the hit Yellowstone prequel 1883 (2021) that people really began to see him as a wild cowboy. In it, he plays Shea Brennan, a man that helps move a group of Europeans, as well as the Duttons, from Texas to Montana in the hopes of finding a better, easier life.

“It wasn’t a big stretch for me, because I was so familiar with the genre,” Elliott told Variety of the Yellowstone universe. “That said, I went places I had never gone before in that genre. And I think that’s probably because so much of the character was internalized.”

In the same interview, Elliott talked about his character’s tragic ending—which was him deciding to end his own life—something that he found just as sad as the viewers.

“I think everybody was sad to see it over; I know I was. I would have liked to have that wagon train go to Canada by then and just stay with it,” Elliott explained. “My thought was, ‘Let’s do a prequel of this. Where was LaMonica [Garrett, another 1883 star]? Where were those two guys? Pick it up after the war, when they were Pinkertons. There’s plenty of stuff to do.”

What Sam Elliott is doing now

At 81-years-old, Elliott isn’t slowing down one bit. He’s currently starring as T.L. in Taylor Sheridan’s Landman. The show is currently airing its second season, but according to Elliott they are expected to start filming the highly anticipated third season pretty soon.

“I’m excited to see what unfolds in Season 3,” Elliott told Extra TV in November 2025, per US Weekly. “I mean, we’re talking about Season 2, but that’s the backstory for us at this point. We’re all kind of looking toward April and May [of 2026] when we start shooting Season 3.”
