If you’re one of the millions of people who found themselves swept away to Westeros at the height of Game of Thrones’ popularity, then there’s a good chance you’ve been waiting with bated breath for the release of the latest series within the GoT universe, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. While fans of the original show have already gotten to enjoy another installment within this fantasy realm with the hit prequel House of the Dragon, this next story is unlike what we’ve seen before. Here, read everything we know about A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, when it comes out, who will be starring and how it connects to Game of Thrones.

All about ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’

Though a piece of the Game of Thrones puzzle, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms takes place 100 years before the events of the original show and follows a new and unfamiliar set of characters. At the helm is Ser Duncan the Tall, a knight who, though young and naive, has a sense of bravery to him despite serving as a squire for most of his life. By his side in this next chapter of his life is his new squire, Egg. Together, they embark on a series of adventures in this tale defined by courage and hope. Based on a series of novellas written by George R. R. Martin, fans can anticipate this story to lean away from some of the darkness and violence many came to associate with Game of Thrones.

‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ cast

In the lead role as Ser Duncan the Tall is Peter Claffey, an Irish actor and former rugby player who has appeared in works such as Small Things Like These (2024), Wreck and Bad Sisters. Opposite Claffey is Dexter Sol Ansell, bringing to life the role of Egg. Though just 11 years old, this young actor already has an impressive resume that includes movies like The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (2023) and Robin and the Hoods (2024). Also joining the cast is Bertie Carvel as Baelor Targaryen, Daniel Ings as Ser Lyonel Baratheon, Danny Webb as Ser Arlan of Pennytree, Shaun Thomas as Raymun Fossoway, Sam Spruell as Maekar Targaryen and countless others.

How ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ connects to ‘Game of Thrones’

If names like “Targaryen” and “Baratheon” sound familiar to you, they should! After all, some of the most influential characters from Game of Thrones fall within these family lines. While this story has ties to shows like Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, this particular story takes place 100 years before the first series. With that in mind, there are no dragons roaming Westeros, and the magical, fantasy element within those first two series is far less prominent in this one.

Nobody’s thinking about magic,” showrunner Ira Parker told Entertainment Weekly. “This could basically be 14th-century Britain. This is hard-nose, grind it out, gritty, medieval knights, cold with a really light, hopeful touch. It’s a wonderful place to be. We are ground up in this series, we are starting right at the bottom. We’re not with the lords and ladies, the kings and queens.”

When does ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ come out?

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms premieres on January 18 at 10:00 p.m. on HBO and HBO Max.
