What is ‘The Abandons’ about?
Taking place in the year 1854 in the Washington Territory, this story begins with two matriarchs at odds with one another. Gillian Anderson brings to life Constance Van Ness, a wealthy woman who inherited a large mining fortune from her late husband—with ambitions of securing her family’s power. Meanwhile, Lena Heady portrays Fiona Nolan, a woman whose family consists of society’s outcasts and folks left behind. Far less well-off than her adversary, Constance, Fiona aims to protect her cattle ranch—and her brood of orphans and outcasts—from her opponent’s grasp. With both women equally as stubborn and willing to stop at nothing for their clans, their conflicts only grow more intense as secrets, illicit romances and land disputes come into play.
“This first chapter of The Abandons is a classic American story—the frontier, two families both at war and in love with each other, [and] a battle over who owns the land and who makes the rules,” executive producer Christopher Keyser told Tudum. “In the middle of murder and revenge and a bit of illicit romance, we get to explore questions we never seem to get away from: What makes a family? How do you stay good in a bad world? And would you change who you are and what you believe in to protect what you love? But in this case, we do it all through the eyes of Lena Headey and Gillian Anderson, as two widowed matriarchs battling to survive. And that…is really something to watch.”
