The Savannah Bananas are taking the internet by storm right now. For those that are unfamiliar with them, the Bananas are a baseball team based in Savannah, Georgia who sing, dance and act silly throughout the games. Currently, the team tours all over the country but that didn’t stop players David “DR” Meadows and Reese Alexiades from sitting down with Woman’s World to discuss their time on the team and their bucket list career goals. The Savannah Bananas reveal what it’s like to be on the team
Alexiades is number 2 on the Savannah Bananas’ roster. He plays right field and graduated from Pepperdine University,
“When I was playing pro ball, the Bananas approached me about going to a tryout, possibly being on the team, and I knew very little about it. Now being here, what really stood out was this idea of being fans first and doing for one what you could do for many. Being able to see the impact our yellow jersey really has is pretty cool,” Alexiades tells Woman’s World. “My favorite memory was in my first year. I did a whole walk-up where I went on skis in a full ski outfit and ski boots and ended up hitting a home run.”
Meadows on the other hand plays center field. He studied at Columbus State University Turner College of Business and is number five on the Bananas.
“I used to play for their collegiate summer league team back when they were playing real baseball, and they asked me if I wanted to go on tour with them to play Banana Ball. I was done with college, so I was, like, ‘Absolutely.’ And five years later, we’re still here. It’s been so much fun, it still feels like year one to me,” Meadows says. “Just the joy it brings to myself, and that carries over to bringing joy to others. And like Reese was saying, being fans first is super special, but also getting out of our comfort zone and opening up our shell, and not being afraid to do things or talk to people or dance. I’m not a very good dancer. I used to hate dancing, but now I’m comfortable doing it in front of people. And probably one of my favorite memories is doing the first backflip catch in an MLB stadium, and just hearing the roar in the crowd—it was just on another level.”
The Savannah Bananas reveal what’s on their bucket list
The Savannah Bananas have been all over, but according to Alexiades and Meadows the one place they really want to go is Japan.
“That’s my big bucket list goal,” Alexiades says. “That would be so cool, and I just think they would love what the Bananas have to offer.”
Also a bucket list item? Their recent partnership with Dairy Queen (DQ) to promote Miracle Treat Day, which helps raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network.
“DQ is special because we have the opportunity, being on the Bananas, to impact others. And when I first heard about this partnership, the big thing that stood out to me was the Children’s Miracle Network,” Alexiades explains. “So now being able to highlight Miracle Treat Day on July 30th—and not only us but others can make an impact just by getting a Blizzard Treat—is truly special.”
Meadows adds to that, saying, “I personally was super excited about it. DQ does a lot for the Children’s Miracle Network, the hospitals, giving back to those kids and their families and just bringing joy to them as they’re going through something that we couldn’t even imagine going through. That’s what we do as Bananas as well—we bring joy to people who can come to our games or who see us online. So what puts a bigger smile on somebody’s face than a Blizzard Treat from DQ?”
