As the star of Malcolm in the Middle and Breaking Bad, Bryan Cranston is a longtime TV icon, and the 70-year-old star has just reprised his breakout role as the patriarch of a lovably dysfunctional family on the miniseries reboot Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair, now streaming on Hulu.

In addition to this nostalgic new show, Cranston has also been making headlines for being the proud dad of Taylor Dearden, a fan-favorite star of the acclaimed medical drama The Pitt. Dearden goes by the last name of her mom, actress Robin Dearden, and Robin and Bryan have been married for over 35 years. Read on to learn about their relationship and see what Cranston has said about his daughter’s rising stardom.

Bryan Cranston and Robin Dearden’s ’80s meet-cute on a ‘terrible’ TV show

Before he was famous, Bryan Cranston made guest appearances on many TV shows, and a 1986 episode of the military drama Airwolf forever changed his personal life. In the long-forgotten episode, Cranston played a villain hijacking a sorority reunion cruise, while Robin Dearden played one of the sorority sisters being held hostage. It wasn’t your typical romantic setting—Cranston was literally holding a gun to his future wife’s head—but in a People interview, Dearden fondly recalled, “He had a girlfriend and I had a boyfriend at the time. But I thought that he was the funniest man that I had ever met. I said, ‘He’s kind of cute, he’s got a gun . . .’”

Cranston had previously been married to writer Mickey Middleton from 1977 to 1982, and he ultimately thought it was a good thing that he was dating someone when he met Dearden, telling People, “I think it was serendipitous, because, as Robin says, if we had been unencumbered at the time and started dating, she doesn’t think that we would have stayed together. But because she had a boyfriend and I had a girlfriend, we were able to flirt without the heavy sexual tension, but there was sexual tension, let me tell you! But not the heavy sexual tension, not the ‘faux pas’ sexual tension, but it was there.”

A year after the fateful Airwolf episode, the newly single actors happened to cross paths and immediately felt a connection—and the rest is history. They married in 1989 and have been together ever since. As Cranston quipped, “We met on that terrible TV show. It changed both of our lives.”

Marrying the right person, couples therapy and creative collaborations

Cranston and Dearden will be celebrating their 37th anniversary this year, and when asked to share his secret to a lasting marriage, the actor kept things sweet and simple, offering, “Marry the right person. I think there are five things that you should look for in a mate. Whatever those five things are to you, you need those five things. After that, let it go. We’re never going to be completely alike on everything.”

In an interview with GQ, Cranston got candid about how he and Dearden have navigated the ups and downs of their relationship. “My wife and I have been going to therapy together since before we were married,” he revealed. “I look at it like the warning light going off on your dashboard. It’s telling you, ‘You might want to pay attention to this.’ I love my wife, and we want to go the distance, but I want to do it in a healthy way. I don’t want to just be with her. I don’t want to just have the two of us go into a restaurant and no one says a word.”

The two actors have also supported one another creatively. In 1999, Cranston directed the independent film Last Chance, in which he and Dearden costarred. The movie was a passion project for the actor, as he wrote the screenplay specifically for his wife. Cranston went on to direct a 2013 episode of Breaking Bad featuring both his wife and daughter in small roles.

Cranston has called Dearden his “partner in all things,” and he takes an unpretentious approach to the fact that he’s the bigger star. As he put it to GQ, “She’s been the plus one, she’s been the wife of a celebrity. She’s had to pivot and adjust her life based on mine. She has tremendous benefit from it, but we’re uneven. I want to level that out. She deserves it.” To that end, he and his wife have been intentional about stepping away from the spotlight when it works for them and making sure to keep their relationship balanced.

Proud parents to a star of ‘The Pitt’

Bryan Cranston and Robin Dearden’s only child, Taylor Dearden, was born in 1993. After her debut cameo appearance alongside her parents in Breaking Bad, she starred in the shows Sweet/Vicious and American Vandal. She’s currently starring in her biggest role to date, playing Dr. Mel King, the empathetic medical resident on The Pitt. Taylor has earned rave reviews for her sensitive portrayal of a neurodivergent character, and she’s spoken about drawing from her own experience with ADHD to bring Mel to life.

A heartwarming Entertainment Tonight interview featuring Cranston praising his daughter’s performance has just gone viral, with the actor saying, “Anytime your child is praised for anything, even a little moment of kindness—it just lifts a parent up. And she’s so good! On a great show!” When asked if he ever gives her acting advice, he responded, “I like to stay her dad. She is more advanced in her ability now at the age of 33 than I was, and she’s doing some amazing work. So I’d rather just stay her dad and be the cheerleader.”

Between the Malcolm in the Middle reboot and The Pitt, it’s clear that the Cranston-Dearden family is having a major moment, and we love that they’ve stayed grounded and good-humored through it all.
