With The Pitt Season 2 nearing its end, lots of change is on the horizon for the folks at the helm of this series. The hit HBO medical drama takes place in the emergency room of a Pittsburgh teaching hospital and highlights the realistic circumstances and situations healthcare workers face everyday. Leading the way is Noah Wyle as Dr. Robby alongside nurse Dana Evans, played by Katherine LaNasa. Also making their mark within this cast is Taylor Dearden, the daughter of famed Malcolm in the Middle and Breaking Bad actor Bryan Cranston, as well as Isa Briones, Patrick Ball, Fiona Dourif and more.
Shawn Hatosy also joins this cast as night shift attending physician Dr. Abbot, and last year, the actor took home an Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for the role. Though his appearances in Season 2 are sporadic, so beloved is his character that many are rallying for a “night shift” spinoff—and the actor recently commented on the possibility. Here, see what Hatosy had to say about potentially bringing Abbot to life in a second series.

Fans are hoping for ‘The Pitt’ spinoff
In a recent conversation with People, the actor opened up about the possibility of a Pitt spinoff surrounding the folks within Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center that work the night shift. “There’s been a lot of talk about the night shift. That would be really cool. We could do some cool, interesting things with the tone of the show,” the actor revealed. “Dr. Abbot chose the night shift because it’s a certain kind of group of misfits that work together at night.”
While The Pitt Season 2 is still unfolding, news surrounding the upcoming Season 3 revealed that one beloved character would be departing while another would be promoted to a series regular. Supriya Ganesh, who plays senior resident Dr. Samira Mohan, will be saying goodbye to The Pitt at the end of Season 2, while Ayesha Harris, who portrays senior night shift resident Dr. Parker Ellis, is becoming a regular cast member. Could this mean there will be more of a crossover between the night shift and day shift, or is she simply making the switch? We’ll just have to wait and see!
Regardless of where The Pitt goes and whether or not we see Dr. Abbot in a night shift spinoff, the series—and his character—has touched countless lives over the course of its run. “It’s really about honoring the people who live in that pressure every day,” Hatosy told Deadline. “If watching this show helps them even heal a little from some of the stuff that they have to deal with in that high-pressure situation, then, to me, we’ve done something that actually matters.”
