Upon his arrival, he begins working at Skeldale House, where he treats and cares for animals alongside the eccentric Siegfried Farnon and his brother Tristan Farnon. Along the way, he forms bonds with Mrs. Hall, the housekeeper at Skeldale House, as well as the lovely Helen, a farmer’s daughter who steals his heart. Over the course of the show, we’ve seen Mrs. Hall and Helen’s relationship evolve quite a bit, the duo leaning on one another and sharing advice throughout the series—and when the cameras aren’t rolling, the relationships between Anna Madeley, who portrays Mrs. Hall, and Rachel Shenton, who plays Helen, is quite similar.
Shenton filmed Season 6 while pregnant with her baby boy, and proceeded to film the Christmas special not long after giving birth. In a post she shared to Instagram celebrating the wrap of Season 6, she shouted out those who made it possible, with a special nod to Madeley. The actress elaborated on Anna Madeley’s help and comfort during this time in conversation with Masterpiece, saying, “I’m indebted to Anna Madeley in many ways. We’ve become very good friends and I love her dearly. When I returned after having my baby…Well, it’s bizarre afterwards, because it’s such a heady experience and sort of bigger than I ever could have imagined, the level of love that was suddenly activated and the level of vulnerability—I know fears about things that I didn’t even know about, all this stuff,” she shared.
“I think he was only three months old when I went back, so still very much in that newborn stage. And Anna had been there and done it—when we first started shooting in Season 1, her little boy was 10 months old, so she’d very much knew what I was feeling.”
Rachel went on to share a story in which she realized the apartment she was staying in didn’t have a microwave for sterilizing baby bottles. She gave Madeley a call, who revealed she had a microwave in her apartment. Before Rachel could do anything, she looked out the window to find Anna walking up the road, microwave in tow—a sweet gesture that meant everything to this new mom!
Rachel Shenton and Anna Madeley work together again in ‘Gladstone Girls’
Rachel Shenton and Anna Madeley have also worked together on the scripted podcast series Gladstone Girls, which tells the story of a group of female pottery workers in the 70s who stand up to protect one of their traditions of turning their workroom in the factory into a hair salon on Friday evenings.
