Who Is Morgan Wallen? All About the ‘SNL’ Musical Guest Who Abruptly Walked Off Stage
‘Get me to God’s country’—all about the country star who left the show without a word
Every episode of Saturday Night Live ends with the host, cast and musical guest sharing hugs and “thank yous” on stage—but this weekend, country singer Morgan Wallen did something unexpected. After performing live on the March 29 episode hosted by Anora star Mikey Madison, Wallen walked off stage without saying goodbye to the cast, sparking online buzz and headlines.
While his quick departure got people talking right off the bat, it was his posts on social media afterward that added fuel to the fire. Sharing a photo of a plane on the tarmac to his Instagram story, Wallen captioned the photo, “Get me to God’s country,” sparking conversation that perhaps his experience on Saturday Night Live wasn’t particularly pleasant.
Since Saturday’s show, where he performed his hits “I’m the Problem” and “Just In Case,” there’s been quite a bit of buzz surrounding this, and longtime SNL star Kenan Thompson even shared his thoughts on the matter. “It’s definitely a spike in the norm,” Thompson told Entertainment Weekly. “We’re so used to everybody just turning around and high-fiving us, everybody’s saying, ‘Good job, good job, good job.’ So when there’s a departure from that, it’s like, hmm, I wonder what that’s about?” He went on to comment on Wallen’s social media post as well, saying, “The ‘God’s country’ of it all is strange because it’s like, what are you trying to say? You trying to say that we are not in God’s country? We’re not all in God’s country? We’re not all under God’s umbrella? That’s not necessarily my favorite,” he remarked.

Morgan Wallen as a father: his son Indigo and co-parenting with Katie Smith
Wallen has one son, Indigo, with his former fiance, who was born in 2020. While he and Indigo’s mom, Katie Smith, are no longer together, the country singer has been outspoken about fatherhood since welcoming his son. “It gives me something to focus on that’s not just all about myself because for a while, I had to be super selfish. I had to mostly focus on myself or [my career] wouldn’t work,” he told Billboard in 2023. “It’s nice to really think about someone other than yourself and about what you’re passing down. He’s my favorite thing about life.”
Morgan Wallen’s past ‘SNL’ controversies and legal troubles
Though the birth of his son forced the country singer to refocus, the last few years of his career have not been free of controversy—and some of it even ties back to his first appearance on Saturday Night Live. In 2020, the singer was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and public intoxication, and a few months later, shortly before he was scheduled to appear on Saturday Night Live, he was cut from the episode when videos surfaced of him violating COVID protocols ahead of the show. He went on to appear in a later episode in the season alongside Jason Bateman.

In 2021, he was suspended from his record label when videos surfaced of him using a racial slur. His most recent controversy prior to walking off the SNL stage came last year when he was arrested after he threw a chair off the balcony of a rooftop bar in Nashville.
