Chris Martin certainly isn’t shy about calling out his fans on the jumbotron, but this time it seems his concert banter has caused some real damage. In case you missed it, lead singer of Coldplay, Chris Martin, made a comment about two fans having an affair, which sparked a viral moment.

During a performance at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, Martin sang a rendition of “The Jumbotron Song,” where he sings about couples on the big screen at his concerts. When the camera landed on a couple holding each other, Martin simply said “Whoah, look at these two,” but that prompted a big reaction from the pair.

The woman immediately turned her face away from the camera while the man ducked behind something to get out of view. Martin, who is know. for his banter at shows, commented, “Either they’re having an affair or they’re just very shy.”

Although audiences laughed at the joke, it seems that Martin wasn’t so off with his prediction. Social media users quickly went to work, confirming the identities of Astronomer CEO Andy Byron and his Chief Human Resource Officer, Kristin Cabot, both of whom are apparently married to other people.

The moment was caught on camera by fellow concert goer, Grace Springer, who has shared her thoughts on the situation.

I had no idea who the couple was…” she shared. “[I] “just thought I caught an interesting reaction to the kiss cam and decided to post it…A part of me feels bad for turning these people’s lives upside down, but, play stupid games … win stupid prizes.”

Springer later added, “I hope their partners can heal from this and get a second chance at the happiness they deserve with their future still in front of them. I hope, for them, my video was a blessing in disguise.”

While it seemed that Martin didn’t mean to stir something up with his comment, it’s not the first time something he said has gone viral. One instance in 2024 where a concert goer mistakenly requested the song “Fix It” instead of “Fix You,” Martin called the fan out.

“‘Fix It’ is another song from another band, my brother,” Martin said on stage. But later he sat at his piano and created a rendition of a song called “Fix It,” hoping to make light of the situation.

“Here is a song called ‘Fix It,’ specifically just for that guy/ It’s OK if you come to a concert to call out the name of a song / I’d much prefer you don’t get the name of the song wrong,” Martin sang.

Another recent viral moment of Martin involved the frontman forgetting the words to his 2014 hit, “A Sky Full of Stars,” where he called himself out for messing up.

I f—-d up, I f—-d up. I’m so sorry, I’m so sorry,” Martin said. “I forgot to come in on the right line. Now, normally, I do stop this song as a joke but I did genuinely just make a big mistake, so please forgive me … I’m so sorry.” He later added, “I forgot the words. I forgot what to say. It happens sometimes when you’re my age. I’m nearly 80 years old… but let’s pretend that didn’t happen. Don’t put that on YouTube, if you please.”

Obviously, the video did make it to YouTube and social media, adding to the list of viral Chris Martin blunders.

Martin joked that his band is ‘older’

Martin also made a hilarious joke in 2024, calling his band “older” and how that “frustrates” some people. In case you didn’t know, Coldplay formed in London in 1997, making the group nearly 30 years old.

“I know that’s annoying for some of you,” Martin said. “But once upon a time, even that song ‘Viva La Vida’ was new and everyone in the room was like, ‘What the f— is this?… it is amazing that every new song we have lots of people say is terrible…And then 10 years later, it’s a worldwide super classic smash. That’s happened maybe three times. So, the other 76 songs were just terrible.”

In case you haven’t attended a Coldplay concert in a while, or ever, just know you can expect some hilarious quips from the band’s frontman and it will certainly make for an interesting show.
