Before it was a bestselling novel, Alchemised was a fanfiction story titled Manacled by Portland-based author SenLinYu, who identifies as they/them. Fanfiction is brought to life when a writer’s passion demands an answer to the question: “But what if…?” In the world of Harry Potter specifically, there is a devoted legion of fans who imagine a world where the arrogant antagonist known as Draco Malfoy and the studious, smart-witted Hermione Granger are, well, soulmates. The resulting fanfiction subcategory known as “Dramione” refers to any fanfics pairing Draco and Hermione.

Online storytelling platforms like AO3 and Wattpad feature an entire world of “Dramione” fanfictions (also known as “fics”) that center on the forbidden romance between the two fan-favorite characters. And Manacled is one of the most popular fics in this world—with 10 million readers and more than 100,000 5-star ratings on GoodReads. But this 2023 Harry Potter meets Handmaid’s Tale-inspired dark fantasy was eventually completely reworked by the author into a new, traditionally published debut novel titled Alchemised—which published in September 2025.

SenLinYu reimagined the entire universe of Manacled to avoid any legal or copyright issues. After rebuilding the mythology from the ground up and transforming it into an original novel for traditional publication, it became Alchemised

Set in the dark post-war world of Paladia where alchemy is both weapon and currency, the plot follows Kaine Ferron and Helana Marino, two intelligent, razor-sharp rivals bound by ambition, betrayal and a dangerous, all-consuming pull toward each other. As political intrigue tightens and loyalties fracture, they’re forced to decide what they’re willing to sacrifice for power—and true love.

From ‘Manacled’ to ‘Alchemized’: The Draco fanfic connection

SenLinYu says Manacled and Alchemised are completely separate works, though making that distinction wasn’t easy. “It was really a process for me to accept that [the readers] have Manacled,” they said in an interview with Rolling Stone. “That knowledge gave me the confidence to just be like ‘I cannot write this story to the same people that already have that one.’ I have to let them have that and I need to let this story stand on its own.”

Yun said reworking the world made them worry about fans’ reactions. “That was definitely hard. Especially because I was in the community with the people that were reading it, and was aware of the things that they really loved. During the first draft, when I was doing the rewrite, and even into the second one, I was really struggling with the idea of, ‘If I change this, people will be upset’ and over-weighting that concern in a lot of my decisions. Trying to make the story work around what I thought people would be upset about if I changed, rather than focusing on the story itself and trying to make the story into the best version that it could be.”

“I gave a very big warning so people can download Manacled. The people that want that version—who are deeply invested in that version—I tried to give them a lot of time to make sure that they had that version saved [before it was removed from Archive of our Own.]” Manacled was removed from AO3 ahead of SenLinYu publishing Alchemised. The intention was to remove the story from mainstream circulation and to stop illegal sales of the fic, which put the community in legal jeopardy.

When talking about translating the specific characters from Manacaled into their new versions, SenlinYu tried to keep each person’s true characteristics intact. This intricate world building was even expanded on in Alchemised.

I had the two core characters, Kaine and Helena. I knew that there were certain things about them, their character psychology, their background, that I really needed to maintain and make sure that I nailed with them,” they continued. “But for the rest of the cast, I felt pretty capable of developing the characters, figuring out what I needed. I have the character that I need for this story. I need a different archetype. I need a different figure.”

Inside SenLinYu’s record-breaking $3 million film deal

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the movie deal is believed to be one of the biggest in history for a new book’s movie rights. Legendary Entertainment bought the movie rights to Alchemised in a seven-figure deal, according to the outlet. The offer was meant to outbid any competition and the rights deal exceeded $3 million, according to sources.

Legendary has not commented on the deal terms yet. Known for producing massive franchise films like Dune, Godzilla vs. Kong and The Dark Knight trilogy, Legendary is a leading American media company founded in 2000.

What does SenLinYu have to say about the record-breaking deal? “I’m honored by Legendary’s incredible enthusiasm for the project and can’t wait to see the world of Paladia come to life,” said SenLinYu in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter.

When will the ‘Alchemized’ movie release?

As of publication, the Alchemized movie is still in the very early stages of development and pre-production. There is no expected release date yet and many sources have reported there will be a wait of two years or more—which gives fans plenty of time to read (or re-read!) the novel!
