Get To Know Charley Crockett: The ‘Ransom Canyon’ Singer Taking Country Music by Storm
Charley Crockett’s songs tell stories with heart—and he’s touring with Leon Bridges this year
There’s nothing better than stumbling across a new artist you just know is going to make a splash, and Charley Crockett has thus far proven to be country music’s next big thing. The 41-year-old Texas native has only recently become a name people are growing familiar with, but the rising star has been putting in the work for years. The singer got his first guitar gifted to him by his mom at 17 years old, picked up from a pawn shop, and though he didn’t have any formal training to give him an understanding of chords and keys, he somehow managed to make magic. Now, Crockett has turned into something of a renaissance man. The neotraditional country artist’s style combines elements of country with those of gospel, blues and soul.
“I’m recognizing that one of my challenges is they’re having a hard time pinning me down, and what’s interesting about that, to be candid, is that often if they can’t pigeonhole you, that hurts you,” the singer told the Austin Chronicle back in 2018. “They want to be able to understand your sound. And look at me, I’m all over the map.”
