We can hardly contain our excitement over the upcoming series set to hit Max and the Magnolia Network, Back to the Frontier. The brand-new reality series comes from HGTV icons Chip and Joanna Gaines, known for shows like Fixer Upper and the Waco, Texas lifestyle and home empire they’ve created. The show, which is set to premiere on July 10, takes three families back in time—and a brand new trailer just released reveals a glimpse at what fans can expect! Keep reading, check out the new trailer and see what Chip and Joanna have said about this exciting new series.

What is ‘Back to the Frontier’ about?

Back to the Frontier follows three American families as they leave behind the luxuries of their modern lives to see what life was truly like back in the 1800s. Gone are the days of cell phones, television and beauty products as these three groups now take on a new day-to-day life as homesteaders. From taking care of the shelter and gathering food to raising animals, these families will put not only their skills to the test, but their bonds as well.

The series will follow three families: The Lopers from Alabama, the Hannah-Riggs from Texas and the Halls from Florida. At the end of the show, viewers will find out which of these families made it to the end and survived life as 1800s homesteaders. Now, in an all-new trailer, take a look at what you can expect from this series.

Though the new trailer doesn’t indicate which family is which, it does pull the curtain back on what this experience has in store for each one of them. “We want to go backward, so that we can go forward in the right direction,” says one participant in the trailer. As the preview proceeds, we watch as each family strips away the luxuries of their everyday life. A family with two teenage daughters is seen dumping out a large bag of cosmetics and removing their makeup before embarking on this journey. Additionally, we see two young boys reluctantly say goodbye to their devices—and that’s just the start.

Upon arrival at their new living quarters, the reality of life on the 1800s frontier is shocking. From a less-than-appealing bathroom situation, to having to share a tiny, not-so-luxurious bed to struggling to gather food for dinner, life in the past proves to be more difficult than these families imagined. “This house, the living situation, it’s just hard,” says one girl through tears. Despite the struggles, the trailer reveals a hopeful outcome for each family as they recognize what this time together, disconnected from reality, can really do for them as a unit.

This social experiment is unlike anything we’ve ever created, but we’ve always been drawn to the back-to-basics way of life and loved the idea of giving families a chance to go back in time to experience life as 1880s homesteaders—without all the distractions and technology of the 21st century,” Chip and Joanna Gaines told People. “They learned it was anything but easy, but seeing the way these families come together to survive is something that stays with you. We can’t wait to share their journeys with you this July!”
