The Actors Hoping for a Taylor Sheridan Call, Tom Selleck to ‘Reba’ Star Christopher Rich
Familiar stars open up about why they'd love a role in the 'Yellowstone' universe—and which shows they're eyeing
Key Takeaways
- Tom Selleck wants another Western; Sheridan’s work is on his radar.
- Christopher Rich pitched himself for 'Landman,' citing Texas roots and recovery.
- Sheridan keeps expanding series; cinematic scope and authenticity draw big names.
Taylor Sheridan has built one of the busiest corners of television, and plenty of familiar faces would love a seat at his table.
The writer and producer got his start as an actor before turning to scripts for films including Sicario, Hell or High Water and Wind River. His attention later shifted to the small screen, and Yellowstone was the result. The hit series aired from 2018 to 2024, drawing millions of viewers into the world of the fictional Dutton family.
Sheridan didn’t slow down after that. He expanded the Yellowstone universe with prequels 1883 and 1923, sequels like Dutton Ranch, then layered in original shows Landman, Mayor of Kingstown, Lioness and Tulsa King. Along the way, he attracted a roster of A-list talent that includes Kevin Costner, Harrison Ford, Billy Bob Thornton and Demi Moore.
So who’s next? A handful of beloved actors have made it clear they’d welcome the call.
Tom Selleck wants to sit on a horse again
For 14 seasons on Blue Bloods, Tom Selleck brought police commissioner Frank Reagan to life on the streets of New York City. But two of his most iconic earlier roles—The Shadow Riders (1982) and Quigley Down Under (1990)—let him pull on cowboy boots, dust off his hat and saddle up for sweeping Western adventures. As he wrapped his long run on Blue Bloods, the 81-year-old made it clear he’d love another ride.

In a December 2024 conversation with Parade, Selleck reflected on his career and what might come next. “I wouldn’t say [offers] are pouring in, but maybe some people are thinking of me,” he shared. He didn’t name names, but he did reveal that Sheridan’s work is on his radar—Yellowstone and its spinoffs were enough to spark his interest.
“A good Western’s always on my list,” Selleck said. “I miss that; I want to sit on a horse again.”
The Three Men and a Baby star also lit up at the idea of pairing with his longtime friend Sam Elliott, who appeared in Sheridan’s 1883. Should Sheridan ever feel like teaming up the two Western icons, Selleck is more than ready.
“Sam was great in [1883]. Sam’s always great. We go way, way back. I love him dearly. I’d love to work with Sam.”
A Selleck-Sheridan collaboration hasn’t materialized yet, but the possibility feels closer than ever. Selleck hasn’t taken a role since retiring from Blue Bloods, but in December, he signed with agents United Talent Agency (UTA)—a clear signal he’s open for business. And Sheridan is almost always cooking up something new, so it may just be a matter of time before the right script lands on Selleck’s doorstep.
Christopher Rich would love a ‘Landman’ role

Reba alum Christopher Rich has a very specific Sheridan series in mind, and he makes a compelling case for himself.
“I’d like to get back and do some drama,” Rich told Us Weekly in February 2025 while reflecting on how his career has shifted since suffering a massive stroke that left his entire left side paralyzed. “I’d really love to work with Taylor Sheridan. He builds characters. I would actually be great on Landman. I am from Texas. I’ve spent some time in Midland with the oil boys—and to have a damaged oil worker is nothing unusual at all.”
Rich’s pitch leans into the kind of authenticity Sheridan tends to favor. Landman, set against the gritty backdrop of West Texas oil country, has the texture and stakes that could make Rich’s lived experience—both his Texas roots and his recovery—feel right at home.
Corey Gamble already had his shot
Not every story here is about angling for a part. Some involve the one that got away.

During Season 4 of The Kardashians, which aired in September 2023, Kris Jenner shared an unexpected Yellowstone connection involving her boyfriend Corey Gamble.
“I am so excited to watch the next episode of Yellowstone,” Jenner told daughters Kim Kardashian and Khloé Kardashian. “So they asked Corey to be on Yellowstone. And he said no. I told him to say no. I thought he was going to have a romantic relationship.”
For his part, Gamble made it clear he would have happily said yes if he’d been left to his own devices. “If it wasn’t for you, I would be a Yellowstone star,” he told Jenner.
Why Sheridan keeps attracting big names
It’s no accident that A-listers keep raising their hands for a Sheridan project. The producer has talked openly about the unusual creative freedom Paramount has given him, and that freedom shows up on screen—in the scope, the locations and the cinematic feel that has set his shows apart from typical television fare.
“Because Paramount trusts me and gives me the time to go shoot 10 to 14 days for a television episode, we can treat it like a movie, and it looks like a movie,” Sheridan told Deadline in January 2022. “We can take the time to rehearse it and light it and build these set pieces. And if I call them and say, ‘I need two helicopters in one day,’ they just go, ‘Alright.'”
He also spoke about the appeal of telling stories rooted in worlds that television rarely visits. “At the end of the day, to go to some of these locations where most people have never been, where you’re opening up a new world, and all of these places or characters in the story, to me, it’s fascinating.”
That commitment to authentic, gritty storytelling has paid off in casting. Kevin Costner anchored Yellowstone for years. Harrison Ford joined 1923. Billy Bob Thornton leads Landman. Demi Moore has signed on for new projects. The roster keeps growing, and so does the wish list of actors who’d like to be next.

A wish list with deep roots
What ties Selleck, Rich and Gamble’s stories together is something simple: Sheridan has built worlds people want to live in, even just for a few episodes. For Selleck, it’s the chance to return to a genre that defined some of his most beloved early work—and maybe reunite with a friend of more than six decades. For Rich, it’s the chance to bring real Texas grit and a real survivor’s perspective to a show set among “the oil boys.” For Gamble, it’s the role he almost took, a story his blended family will likely be retelling for years.
Sheridan’s universe is still expanding, with more spinoffs, films and series in development. As long as he keeps writing characters that feel lived-in and worlds that feel earned, the line of actors hoping to join him is only going to get longer. Whether it’s a Western reunion for Selleck and Elliott, a dramatic comeback for Rich on the Permian Basin, or a future surprise none of us see coming, fans of the Sheridan canon have plenty to look forward to.
