In a world with dozens of Wizard of Oz adaptations, from Oz the Great and Powerful to the Wicked musical and films, fans just can’t get enough of the land of Oz. So it should come as no surprise that another version is in the works. This time, however, the plot will be focused on the one iconic character who hasn’t had their own film or series yet: Dorothy.

The girl with the ruby slippers is finally getting her moment to shine after the Wicked Witch has become a worldwide phenomenon with the recent movies. A new series titled Dorothy is in the works with some big names attached (hint: Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton!). Learn everything there is to know about the upcoming show and what you can expect!

About ‘Dorothy’

Although the series’ plot hasn’t been revealed just yet, producers have spilled some exciting tidbits.

The series will be a contemporary, young adult twist on the classic story, infusing music and using the Yellow Brick Road as a metaphor for the challenges of life.

Dorothy will be created and produced by Gina Matthews, who is best known for her work on 13 Going on 30 and Isn’t It Romantic. Joining her as nonwriting executive producers are singers Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton, as well as Lee Metzger, Grant Scharbo and Patrick Moran. Shelton and Metzger work with Lucky Horseshoe Productions while Scharbo and Moran are with Little Engine.

Matthews shared her reasoning for creating the series with Deadline: I’ve been in love with The Wizard of Oz books since I was a child,” she explained. “The story reminds us of the qualities we need to get through hard times, and Dorothy is a symbol of strength who shows us that with a little kindness — and a lot of grit — we can not only achieve great things but also lift up those around us. I’m excited to bring that message to the world, now more than ever.”

Husband-and-wife duo Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton are best known for their musical careers. Stefani was the lead singer for the group No Doubt and experienced incredible success as a solo act and Shelton has a successful country-music career, but now the power couple are dipping their toes into the production world, joining Dorothy as executive producers.

“It’s a creative and modern take on a classic, and being part of something that blends music, emotion, and the character of Dorothy is inspiring to me,” Stefani said of the project.

Shelton joined in with his own thoughts, explaining, “We’re really excited about all the possibilities this show brings, and I’m so grateful that Gina shared the idea with me and Lee. I knew right away it was something Gwen would connect with. Her creativity and perspective are such a natural fit for this project.”

When will ‘Dorothy’ be released?

We have to wait a bit, as the upcoming series was only just announced. A release date hasn’t been shared with the public yet, but we know that it will be worth the wait. With the dream team of Matthews, Shelton, Stefani and more, Dorothy will finally have her time to shine.
