Father-Son Magic: Kurt and Wyatt Russell Play the Same Character in ‘Monarch’—Season 2 Coming Soon
The Russells play the same character in different eras in the Apple TV+ Monsterverse series
For years, the Monsterverse franchise of films has kept viewers glued to their screens as brave heroes go up against gargantuan creatures and super-species that threaten the fate of the world. Starting out with the 2014 film Godzilla and continuing with movies like Kong: Skull Island (2017), Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019), Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) and more, Apple TV’s addition to the Monsterverse, the gripping series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, is back soon with a second season—and we can’t wait for what’s in store. If the captivating story wasn’t enough to hook you, perhaps the stars of the show will: father and son duo Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell. Here, take a look back on Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 1, read about what to expect from Season 2 and what the Russell father-son duo have said about working together on this project.
What happened in ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’ Season 1?
The debut season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters took viewers along on a wild ride and introduced characters we can’t wait to see again in Season 2. Taking place after the events of Godzilla (2014), a woman named Cate travels to Japan to settle her father’s affairs after his mysterious disappearance and connects with her half brother, Kentaro, when she discovers her dad had another family. When they discover mysterious files in his belongings, so begins an expedition that leads them to Lee Shaw (Kurt Russell), who helps them to uncover their dad’s connection to Monarch, an organization dedicated to studying monsters like Godzilla. As the story unfolds in present day, the series jumps back in time to decades prior, revealing Lee Shaw’s involvement in Monarch’s development—and who better to play young Kurt Russell than his son, Wyatt?

Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell join forces on screen
In Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, seeing Wyatt Russell and Kurt Russell bring to life the same character in different eras has been a treat for viewers—and it’s something they’ve enjoyed as well! However, that isn’t to say there wasn’t a little bit of pressure associated with the gig. “The stress was from wanting it to be good and thinking that my dad and I are actually going to do this thing together,” Wyatt told Variety. “I’ve avoided it my whole life because of comparisons. But now it’s 14 years in, and I’m positioned well in my own life and in my career. This could work pretty well. But it didn’t take away the stress of like, ‘This has to be really f— good, otherwise, what’s the point of doing it?’” For Kurt, watching his son in action was a special experience as well.

“We were doing two different crews and I said, ‘I’m going to go check out and see what Wyatt’s group was doing,’” Kurt said during Deadline’s Contenders Television panel back in 2024. “It was fascinating for me because for the first time, this is my son—I’d known him all my life. He knew me his life, I was an actor. I’d watched him before and I’d been on sets of his and stuff, but in an appreciative sort of way. Now I was suddenly watching this character be laid down that I was going to be the other half of much later in life. And it was really fascinating.” He continued, “I found myself watching this actor and I remember thinking, ‘F—, man—this guy’s good. I better get my game going here, because this can’t fall down when it gets to my part of it.’”
‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’ Season 2 is coming
The second season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters promises the same drama and action that the first season packed, and with the fate of the world unknown, anything could happen. “The dramatic saga reveals buried secrets that reunite our heroes (and villains) on Kong’s Skull Island,” says the show’s official logline, “and a new, mysterious village where a mythical Titan rises from the sea.” Don’t miss Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2, premiering on Apple TV on February 27.
