Monica Dutton’s Tragic Death on ‘Marshals’ Explained—How It Shapes Kayce’s Journey
The beloved character's cancer death sets Kayce on a heartbreaking new path in the spinoff
After months of waiting and wondering, fans of Yellowstone spin-off Marshals finally know what happened to Monica Dutton (Kelsey Asbille). In Season 1, Episode 1 of Marshals (formerly known as Y: Marshals), viewers learned that Monica had died from cancer due to toxicity on the reservation. It was a sad ending that was met with a lot of mixed emotions from viewers. We share everything you need to know below about her death, including how it will impact the show going forward.
What to know about Monica’s death on ‘Marshals’
When Marshals was first announced in 2025, fans assumed that Monica was going to be in it. Afterall, the show was centered around her husband Kayce (Luke Grimes), a character that fought hard for his wife and son during the five seasons of Yellowstone. But, when trailers and casting announcements started to be revealed, those same fans noticed that Monica was nowhere to be found. This caused loyal viewers towonder, “Is she dead?”
As it turns out, she was. It was a sad ending, but one that showrunner Spencer Hudnut said was necessary to help Kayce’s journey continue—especially since her death heavily impacts Monica and Kayce’s son, Tate (Brecken Merrill), who is found at a protest for the victims of the reservation’s deadly toxins.
“She passed, which is why Tate wanted to go to the rally, which is why Kayce went to the rally. And so she really is guiding his journey,” Hudnut told Entertainment Weekly. “Her presence and spirit will remain throughout this series. She’s such a huge part of who Kayce Dutton is that she will be with him along the way.”
Grimes echoed similar thoughts, telling the outlet, “The way that Yellowstone ended for Kayce was that he literally rode off into the sunset. Obviously we can’t just watch this guy have his dream life. There’s no drama.”

“Something’s gonna have to happen that gets in the way of him having that. Otherwise, why is he gonna take a [Marshals] badge? The last time we saw him, he was throwing a badge in a field. Is he gonna go pick it up?” the actor continued.
Spoiler alert: He did pick up the badge and is now one of the people expected to protect Montana from forces that no Dutton has ever dealt with before.
“[Kayce’s] not doing too well. And I know how that sounds, no one’s shocked to hear that about Kayce because he’s had a rough go pretty much the whole original series,” Grimes told Parade. “But kind of the worst thing that could possibly happen to him has happened to him, and that’s where we meet him. And so the whole driving force of this show is, what does somebody do when they’re faced with the hardest thing possible? And he decides to fight for his happiness and for change in his life.”
How will Monica’s death impact the rest of the ‘Yellowstone’ universe?
Along with Marshals, Taylor Sheridan has two more modern-day Montana shows coming out this year.
The first is The Madison, which follows the Clyburn family after they move from New York City to Montana. The second is Dutton Ranch, which follows Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) as they begin their new life. Showrunners haven’t confirmed whether Kayce will appear in either show, but considering that a major protest unfolds in Montana during the timeline of The Madison and Dutton Ranch, it’s possible that characters across all three shows could feel the ripple effects.
There is also the chance that Beth could come visit her brother Kayce, or vice versa, which would pave the way for a crossover episode. None of those things have happened, though, meaning that at this point it’s all just speculation.

“I think it’s very original, and I think if you like procedural shows, you will like this show, but you don’t have to like procedurals. I think there’s something for everybody,” Grimes teased to Parade about the rest of Marshals Season 1. “And my hope is that, yes, the fans of the original Yellowstone show will like this, even though it’s very different, but I hope we’ve done enough justice to the characters where they can continue with us.”
“I just felt lucky, man. Lucky to still have this character to play and then to play along with such great guys who’ve become really close friends. It’s like a sort of a family to me now,” he continued. “And of course I miss a lot of those family members, but the ones that I do get to play alongside, I feel very blessed to be with. There’s definitely people who get brought up a lot, so you’re going to hear a lot about some of your favorite characters, but as of right now, there has been no sort of crossover with any of the other characters that are still out there.”
