When Yellowstone concluded back in 2024, fans were sad to say goodbye to the Duttons and the folks that made the Yellowstone Ranch what it was—but thanks to Taylor Sheridan’s endless creativity, most of their stories didn’t end there. With countless spinoffs in the works, the one we’re perhaps most excited about is Marshals (formerly Y: Marshals), which takes us along on Kayce’s journey after the events of Yellowstone’s final episode.

Set to release on March 1, while the show’s plot has been revealed and trailers so far have given a glimpse at what’s to come, folks still have questions—one of the biggest ones being where Kayce’s wife, Monica, is.

While their son Tate (played by Brecken Merrill) was listed amongst the cast bringing this show to life and appeared in the debut trailer, Kelsey Asbille, who portrays Monica, did not appear to be listed as part of the cast, nor could she be seen in the trailer. Fans have been speculating what this could possibly mean and what Monica’s fate might be—the most popular theory being that she has somehow died in the time between Yellowstone and Marshals—and this theory was only further confirmed with the recent release of the show’s newest trailer. For fans who’ve followed Kayce and Monica’s love story through all its ups and downs—from their struggles on the reservation to finding peace together—the thought of losing Monica is devastating. After everything they overcame to build a life together, could it really end this way? Here, we dive into Monica’s potential fate and what fans are speculating might be the outcome in Marshals Season 1.

What is ‘Marshals’ going to be about?

In Marshals, Kayce begins a thrilling new chapter where he combines his cowboy prowess with his elite military skills he acquired during his service. Joining a team of US Marshals in Montana, it’s up to him and his new crew to keep the place they call home safe. With threats at nearly every turn, the stress of the job certainly leaves its mark, especially as he attempts to balance his newfound duty with his role as a father and friend.

“I fought every day to get out from under the weight of the Yellowstone,” Kayce says in the show’s first trailer. “I lost my teammates, my parents—even my brothers. I know that sometimes good men have to do bad things—but I’m trying to find a new beginning.”

What happened to Monica in ‘Marshals’?

Being that Kelsey Asbille’s name isn’t listed in the show’s credits and she didn’t appear in the show’s trailer, fans have been speculating what could have possibly led to her absence. In terms of her and Kayce’s marriage, based on the way Yellowstone ended, it seemed as though their relationship was in a good place as they took on the next chapter together, which for many, has eliminated the theory that they split up for some reason. That being said, many have drawn the conclusion that her character has died, which ultimately led Kayce to take on this new job, marking a fresh start for the Dutton son.

In the show’s first trailer, Kayce is seen sitting in front of a headstone, also prompting fans to speculate that it is Monica’s, but the second trailer released just a few days ago affirmed this theory for many. “My family’s had this land for over 150 years,” Kayce begins. “The only thing I ever wanted was taken from me.” In this pivotal moment of the trailer, Kayce looks onward solemnly standing behind his son, Tate, and in the clip that follows, a body is seen being covered by a sheet on a bed. What comes next in the trailer gives fans a glimpse at a season full of action and intense drama, and it looks like that theory about Kayce chasing his next chapter after Monica’s possible death isn’t all that far-fetched. “I know you’ve got your own demons to conquer,” says one character to Kayce in the trailer. “But jumping back into the fire is going to do you well.”

Fans on Reddit have theories about Monica’s fate in ‘Marshals’

On Reddit, some viewers have elaborated on their theories regarding Monica’s absence—and they’re a little bit heartbreaking. “I think we can officially infer she is dead. A couple of months ago, someone in here posted a grave prop they came across while hiking. It had her name on it,” explained one Reddit user. “The recent trailer shows Kayce placing flowers on a makeshift grave. Upon examination, it’s the exact grave site that bore her name in the past post. As others have said, my guess is that her death will be the driving force of him joining the Marshals.”

While this is, of course, just a theory and her possible death remains a mystery, the show’s new trailer did give a glimpse at the threats Kayce is going to face in the debut season of Marshals. In addition to the rough terrain and gritty setting that Montana provides, the trailer showed that two violent gangs were going to be posing a prevalent threat in this new season, and we can only imagine what things are going to look like as he goes up against these new foes.

While Monica’s fate remains uncertain until Marshals premieres on March 1, one thing is clear: Kayce’s journey is far from over. Whether he’s honoring Monica’s memory or finding a way forward after unimaginable loss, fans will be there to support him every step of the way. After all, we’ve watched Kayce survive war, family betrayals, and the constant chaos of ranch life—his resilience has always been one of his most compelling qualities. And if Monica truly is gone, watching Kayce navigate grief while protecting his son and serving his community will be a powerful testament to the strength of love and the human spirit. Plus, let’s not forget: Taylor Sheridan has surprised us before with unexpected plot twists and emotional gut-punches we never saw coming. Until we see that first episode, there’s still room for hope—and that’s what keeps us coming back to the world Sheridan has created. One thing’s for certain: March 1 can’t come soon enough.
