It’s almost time for the newest Taylor Sheridan show Marshals (formerly known as Y:Marshals), but before you start binging the newest Yellowstone spinoff, you might want to remember where each Dutton ended up.  Below, we’ve recapped where the Duttons ended up at the end of Yellowstone, and share if there’s a chance they could appear in Marshals

Due to Kevin Costner’s departure from the show, John Dutton III was murdered in the middle of Season 5. The death rocked the Dutton family and resulted in a murder that we will get into later. Because of that, it’s unlikely that John will appear in any Yellowstone spinoffs, even though the actor did say he would be interested.

“I would love to go back under the right circumstances, I think that all of us want that. For me, it really needs to be the right circumstances,” Costner said on the Today show in 2024. “There’s always a chance.”

Lee Dutton

Lee Dutton (Dave Annable) died in the very first episode of Yellowstone after a cattle accident. He was never shown again, meaning that he most likely won’t be in Marshals

Jamie Dutton

Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley) was easily one of the most evil characters on Yellowstone. Not only did he abandon his family, but he also spent numerous hours torturing them. In the end, Jamie is killed by his sister, Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly), for his indirect involvement in John’s death, meaning that he most likely won’t be in Marshals, which we are more than okay with.

“I will miss it [the show], but I will also celebrate it being over,” Bently told The Hollywood Reporter. “I hate playing him [Jamie]. I try not to judge my characters, but it’s been enough years that it’s hard not to at this point. It’s very hard to play him. And at the same time, I love it. I’m going to miss the challenge. Every single scene is literally the hardest scene I’ve ever had to do. Or it’s bringing in a new challenge. If the next thing is not the same challenge, I’m definitely going to miss it.”

After killing her brother Jamie, Beth decides to move to a different Montana ranch with her husband, Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser), and their adopted son, Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser). It’s unclear if she will be in Marshals since she has her own spinoff show in the form of Dutton Ranch, but since she’s alive there’s a chance it could happen at least once.

“It was a shame it ended that way, but it did,” Reilly told The Times of the show’s conclusion earlier this year. “I’m just picking my words, because I’ve never really talked about it. A lot went on behind the scenes that had nothing to do with me; I was just waiting.”

Kayce Dutton

At the end of Yellowstone, Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) sells the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch and decides it’s best to move on with his wife and son, respectively, Monica (Kelsey Asbille) and Tate (Brecken Merrill). Kayce will appear in Marshals, which makes sense given that the show is centered around him.

“It will be weird,” Grimes told People magazine of Marshals back in June of 2025. “There’s going to be some familiar faces, but there’s going to be a lot of new faces, too, so we’ll see how that all feels.”

“We definitely wanted to make sure to give it a real story and make it interesting and make it believable,” he continued. “If it was just, like, ‘Well, he’s happy’ — we’re just going to watch him be happy? That’s not very cool. But I’ll say this, the idea that was pitched to me is very, very good and very interesting and it really roped me in and I think it will rope the audience in as well.”

Monica Dutton

As mentioned above, Monica’s journey in Yellowstone ends with her husband and son, meaning that she is alive. Flash forward to the Marshals trailer though, and everyone’s asking the same question: “Is she dead?” So far, no one from the cast has commented on the rumors, but Asbille has discussed her thoughts on the Yellowstone ending.

“Our last day of shooting is something I’ll never forget, because we were kind of sitting ducks with the fires, with the smoke,” Asbille told Town and Country in January 2025. “So, we were waiting for it to finally clear. It was our last day; it’s the final time you see these characters, and we’re all on horseback—even our director, Taylor Sheridan, he’s on horseback—and we’ve got a hundred cattle, and the clouds just part and the sun goes over the hill and it’s just gorgeous, really beautiful.”

Tate Dutton

Just like his parents, Tate ends his time on Yellowstone alive and well. He has also been confirmed to appear in Marshals

“I keep seeing farewell posts, and I guess it’s time. Goodbye, Tate. It was an honor and a privilege to grow up with you,” Merrill wrote on Instagram in 2024 following the end of Yellowstone. “I’m forever grateful to Taylor and my whole Yellowstone family. You guys are all magic makers, and I’m proud to know you.”
