If you fell hard for Ransom Canyon like we did, then you’re probably asking yourself if you can head to the real-life locations and get your cowboy fix—so where exactly was Ransom Canyon filmed? Though the west-Texas town is fictional, the wide-open spaces that served as the backdrop for this juicy Netflix drama were as real as they come. Here, read all about the Ransom Canyon filming locations.

Is Ransom Canyon a real place?

While Ransom Canyon is set in Texas, much of this western was actually filmed in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, New Mexico, as well as a few other cities throughout the picturesque state. Most of New Mexico is adobe architecture, and there’s this one little old mining town in northern New Mexico very close to the Texas border called Las Vegas, ironically, that just looks like an old Texas town,” show creator April Blair told Tudum. “It has all the old turn-of-the-century architecture and storefronts.”

If you were charmed by Staten Kirkland’s (Josh Duhamel) Double K Ranch, you’ll be delighted to know that its real-life counterpart exists between Las Vegas, New Mexico (not Nevada!) and Santa Fe at a place known as Dead Horse Ranch—and for Duhamel, the settings he found himself acting in were quite familiar. Raised in North Dakota and owning a piece of property with a bit of land, the great outdoors are something he’s fond of.

“New Mexico is a spiritual place,” the actor told Tudum. “You can see why so many artists migrate there and why it is known as the Land of Enchantment. You can watch the sunsets in the hillsides and the vistas are unbelievable. I have very fond memories of the New Mexican terrain and the work environment was very easy to be creative in.”

And Staten’s land isn’t the only place in this series that took our breath away! Davis Collins’ Bar W Ranch is the Blame Her Ranch outside of Santa Fe, while Cap’s Fuller Ranch is the Buena Vista Ranch. Meanwhile, Quinn’s adorable home was a piece of the Bonanza Creek Ranch—and Ransom Canyon is certainly not the first Hollywood production to tap this setting for filming. “The ranch is spread out over several thousands of acres and features a large Western Town set, three separate homestead sets, one of which overlooks a natural pond, and a Spanish Fort set, with a dugout structure hidden in the side of a hill in the near distance,” said their website. Over 150 movies, series and commercials have used Bonanza Creek as a filming location including Django Unchained (2012), Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) and countless others.

Why New Mexico was the perfect stand-in for Texas

While filming in New Mexico allowed us to embed ourselves in Ransom, the state’s beating sun also did its part, as the show’s basecamp and catering were powered almost entirely by solar power—the first Netflix production to do so. While this series might not have actually been filmed in Texas, New Mexico certainly delivered by bringing the show to life. “Honestly, you can actually see Texas from some of the ranches,” April Blair told Netflix. “Mood and topography-wise, it’s very, very similar.”
