Netflix’s ‘Ransom Canyon’ Is Based on These Books—And a Prequel Is Coming Soon!
Jodi Thomas wrote 9 books in the ‘Ransom Canyon’ series—read all about them ahead of the premiere!
Some of our favorite series and films came right off the pages of a novel, and while the old saying states that the book is always better than the movie, we like to think you can have your cake and eat it too. As fans anxiously anticipate the premiere of Netflix’s all-new western drama Ransom Canyon on April 17, you might be surprised to learn that this exciting new series, chock full of hunky cowboys, land debacles and romance, was inspired by a series of books written by Jodi Thomas. Here, all about the Ransom Canyon book series and what the long-time author has said about this exciting new adaptation.
Who is Jodi Thomas, author of ‘Ransom Canyon’?
A New York Times bestselling author, though her work making it to the big screen is nothing short of exciting, this isn’t Jodi Thomas’s first brush with fame. The former teacher, who used to instruct homemaking classes and teach special ed, knew that regardless of what her job title was, writing was her top priority. “I absolutely loved being a teacher,” she told Brick & Elm. “I made lifelong friends, and I cherished seeing the students grow and change. But I think I’ve always considered myself a writer first. It’s just that, back then, I was a writer who paid the bills by teaching.”
One person she’s credited as always being in her corner, encouraging her throughout her career, was her husband. “Once when I was starting out I was frustrated about never having time to write between teaching, raising two boys and doing all the other things people do,” she recalled to The Ready Frenzy blog in 2016. “My husband asked how much time I needed and I said, ‘If I just had one more hour.’ He smiled. ‘I’ll do the dishes. I’ll put the boys to bed and take care of the boomerang hour. You go write.’ I truly believe that extra hour was what made my career possible.”
All about the ‘Ransom Canyon’ books
With the series premiering soon, fans are excited to watch this West Texas-set story unfold. In the small town of Ransom Canyon, three ranches, those who run them and their unique ways of life intertwine throughout the show. There’s the stoic and traditional Staten Kirkland, the gruff and grieving Cap and the ambitious and modern-minded Davis Collins. Also, an important piece of the puzzle is Quinn O’Grady, a local woman whose spirit charms a few of these ranchers, making for another point of conflict.

If you’re hoping to soak up the pages of the novels that inspired this story, the series consists of a total of nine books. The first in the series, Ransom Canyon, was released in 2015 and was followed by Rustler’s Moon. After that comes Lone Heart Pass, Sunrise Crossing, Wild Horse Springs, Indigo Lake, Mistletoe Miracles, Christmas in Winter Valley, and in May, fans can expect a prequel story, Silverleaf Rapids, which tells the origin story of Staten. Readers can get their hands on that one on May 27, 2025.
What has the author said about the Netflix adaptation?

While some purists might not love it when their favorite books get the television treatment, author Jodi Thomas is excited that this Netflix adaptation will introduce her work to a new audience. “I’ve always dreamed of seeing my work on the big or little screen. I imagine most writers do. But I didn’t write the books with that in mind. I was mainly interested in writing the best novel I could. I think they lend themselves well to film because they take place in visually powerful settings,” she shared with Brick & Elm. “The small-town setting is stunning. I got a chance recently to visit the set. It’s amazing to see what the set designers and producers have done to make the world of Ransom Canyon come alive. I think readers are going to love how the world translates from the page to the screen.”
We certainly can’t wait!
