Any reader knows how exciting it is to see your favorite book turned into a feature film or TV show. From getting to see what the magical worlds actually look like, to finally putting a face to a character’s name, it truly is an unmatched experience—especially for fantasy fans. And where there’s fantasy, there’s Sarah J. Maas‘ bestselling series A Court of Thorns and Roses (ACOTAR). For years, readers everywhere have been waiting for that series to be adapted and, thanks to the author’s recent podcast appearance, that might finally be happening! We share what Maas said below.

What to know about the ‘ACOTAR’ TV show

A few years ago, Maas announced in a now deleted Instagram post that ACOTAR was being adapted into a Hulu series. Ron Moore, best known for Outlander, Battlestar Galactica and For All Mankind, was going to serve as the showrunner and, according to Maas, they were “hard at work writing the pilot.”

“While there is SO much more news to share with you guys about bringing this series to life, it just feels so great to finally be able to talk about this!” Maas continued. “Stay tuned for more details.”

Following that announcement, multiple outlets reported that there had been several delays in production, one of the most notable ones being Moore leaving the show back in July 2024.

“I can tell you I am no longer working on it because I left Disney and I’ve returned to Sony,” Moore told Entertainment Weekly at the time. “And ACOTAR was a project that was at 20th Century Television and Disney.”

“I had worked on it for a while but it was still in development, as they say, when I left,” he continued. “So I don’t know what the status is anymore.”

In February 2025, Variety reported that the show was officially canceled. Hulu and Maas never commented on the rumors, leaving many readers wondering what actually happened.

And now—after months of waiting—they finally have an answer.

During a recent appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast, Maas told host Alex Cooper that she has “the rights back to everything now.”

“Getting the rights back to all my things has been a big part of my journey in recent years that maybe at some point soon I will talk more about, but right now my focus is on books. It’s been a little while since you guys have had something [to read], so I’m focusing on that,” Maas continued. “I’m a type A control freak and I want to know everything about how it gets made, not because of that control, but just because I love movies. I love TV. I want to be a part of that and I want to see everything adapted the way I envision it and the way I know fans want it… I will dedicate everything that I have to make it right. I’ll be in there looking at all the design, but also, like, ‘What does it sound like?’ ’cause music plays such a big part, so the music is gonna have to be like a huge project.”

‘ACOTAR’ TV show cast

Over the years, fans have speculated that Margot Robbie would play Feyre in the ACOTAR TV show, and while Maas didn’t confirm or deny that, she did take time to shout out the Wuthering Heights actress.

“Margot’s become one of my friends,” the author said. “She’s as beautiful on the outside as she is on the inside and so, so smart. It’s an overwhelming combination, but she’s a marvelous person.”

‘ACOTAR’ TV show release date

Since the ACOTAR TV show is still in pre-production, there is no official release date. Rest assured, though, because Maas said that when that day comes, she’s going to keep her fans as up to date as possible.

“I view it as my legacy in a way. I put my books out into the world. That’s one way that the fans are interacting and seeing these characters, but the physical version of that needs to be aligned,” the author said. “It can’t just be someone’s take on that.”
