The ‘Boston Blue’ Midseason Finale’s Shocking Twist Nobody Saw Coming: ‘What Really Happened?’
Find out why Danny might be staying in Boston a bit longer than planned and how he’s planning to help
The midseason finale of Boston Blue was shocking to say the least. The Silver siblings—Lena (Sonequa Martin-Green), Sarah (Maggie Lawson) and Jonah (Marcus Scribner)—have been dealing with the murder of their father, Ben Silver. But after a long season of trying to keep his killer, Ronan Flaherty, behind bars, he was released in this final episode due to a corrupt ADA.
Find out more about this shocking midseason finale, including whether Danny plans to stay in Boston and what the show’s creators had to say.
‘Boston Blue’ midseason finale recap: What really happened to Ronan?
With their father’s murderer out on the streets, the entire Silver family was on edge, trying to figure out any way to get him back in jail. But Jonah may have taken his obsession with the matter too far. Jonah began following Ronan, both while on-duty and off, but it was the final few seconds of the finale that changed things.
When Jonah didn’t show up to a planned outing with his partner, Sean Reagan (Mika Amonsen), Lena, Danny and Sean went in search of him. But, as it turns out, they were a bit too late as they found Jonah standing over Ronan’s body, holding a gun and covered in blood, and he whispered, “I’m sorry.”

But as many crime dramas go, the question of what really happened is open to interpretation. Yes, Jonah was found on the scene, but it also entirely goes against his character. The show’s creators have weighed in on that explosive ending, explaining that it was meant to make fans question things.
“Throughout that episode, we’ve seen Jonah go on an emotional journey spurred by the murder of his father, by decisions his mother made, by advice from his grandfather,” Brandon Sonnier said. “It involves the entire family. But when you get down to that moment, Jonah was alone, and no one was really there to see what happened until the last minute when Sean came in. I do wonder: How mad was he? How angry is he in that moment? What is he capable of? And what really happened?”
So, is Jonah really responsible for Ronan’s death or was he just a witness to the murder?
Will Danny join the Boston Police Department?

Early on in the episode, Danny was offered a permanent position at the BPD, or Boston Police Department, something he has been putting off since the beginning of the series. While Danny came to Boston for his son, Sean, he also ended up liking his new position. And after 14 years in the NYPD, perhaps he was searching for a change.
However, his relocation to Boston means he left the rest of his tight-knit family, and his girlfriend and former partner, Maria Baez, behind, so the decision was a difficult one. But when Jonah gets himself into trouble with a possible murder, Danny decides to officially take on the role.
“The only reason Danny would ever move to Boston was for family,” Sonnier confirmed. “We felt like this midseason finale was the moment for him to declare, “I’m a part of this family now, too. That declaration—‘I’m going to take this on, I’m going to get to the bottom of this, I’m going to need that badge so I can run lead here’—is Danny planting his flag with the Silvers. It’s him saying, ‘I’m part of your family now. Let’s go.’”
After that wild midseason finale, fans are on the edge of their seats waiting to find out what really happened. You will have to wait a few months to find out, but it will be worth the wait. Be sure to tune into the second part of the first season of Boston Blue on Friday, February 27th, 2026, only on CBS and Paramount+!
