‘Magnum, P.I.’ Ditches the Mustache in Reboot, And Fans Aren’t Happy
What comes to mind when you think of the show Magnum, P.I.? For us, it’s a hunky Tom Selleck in a Hawaiian shirt, a Detroit Tigers baseball hat, and of course, that iconic mustache. So it’s no wonder CBS’s first photo of the Magnum, P.I. reboot is disappointing. Magnum’s memorable getup has been replaced with what looks like a model from a glossy magazine. Though we can appreciate Magnum 2.0 actor Jay Hernandez’s good looks and sly smile, we’ll admit that a five o’clock shadow is no match for Selleck’s glorious lip rug. For longtime Magnum, P.I. fans, the lead character’s transformation caused quite a stir.

Something doesn’t feel right, does it? The photo’s only saving grace is that the new Magnum is still driving a red Ferrari. Luckily for us, internet users responded with Magnum makeovers of their own.

Honestly, no offense to @jay_hernandez just no replacing Tom Selleck. Like remaking Dirty Harry without Clint.

We’ll refrain from passing judgement on the quality of the reboot until it airs during CBS’s fall 2018 lineup, but we can’t help feeling like it won’t truly be Magnum, P.I. without the mustache (or Tom Selleck, for that matter). Again, we have nothing against 40-year-old actor Hernandez, who is best known for his roles on Friday Night Lights, Bad Moms, and Suicide Squad.
The merciful executives at CBS will reportedly keep the premise of the Magnum, P.I. reboot similar to the original’s, which was that former Navy SEAL Thomas Magnum moves to Hawaii to open shop as a private investigator. CBS has also announced additional Magnum, P.I. reboot castings, which include Happy Endings star Zachary Knighton as Rick Wright, Law and Order: SVU actor Stephen Hill as TC Calvin, and British actress Perdita Weeks as Juliet Higgins. And considering the reboot won’t debut until later this year, Hernandez still has some time to grow out the ‘stache should he so choose — and we hope he does!
