It’s officially that time of year — cold in the mornings, hot in the afternoons, and chilly at night. Dressing for the transition from late summer to early fall can be a little tricky: It’s not quite time to bring your heavy sweaters out of storage, but you’re shivering in those short-sleeved tops. Luckily, there are ways to survive in style (without breaking the bank). Use these four style tips to successfully take your wardrobe from summer to fall.

Bring Out the Basics

You don’t need to buy expensive, flashy couture to be stylish. The solid tunic you bought in every color of the rainbow last year might not scream “up-to-the-minute fashion,” but staple pieces like these are the key to a flexible, comfortable wardrobe in any season. Think of your basics — solid-colored t-shirts, flowing peasant blouses, etc. — as the building blocks for your wardrobe. They can be dressed up or down. Fashion designer Anina Heé tells Harper’s Bazaar, “Everything works for almost all temperatures if you just tweak the styling … re-wearing the same pieces throughout the year also helps in creating a consistent through line to your look.” See these affordable, versatile staples for inspiration:

Amazon Essentials Women’s Classic-Fit Short-Sleeve Crewneck T-Shirt, Multipacks
Buy from Amazon, $10.62-$28.90
Amazon Essentials Classic-Fit Long-Sleeve Button Down Poplin Shirt in White
Buy from Amazon, $26.30

Layer Up

Not only does layering help keep you cozy in the changing temperatures, it also creates brand new looks from pieces you already have, saving you both time and money. For example, you can make a button-down shirt casually cool by layering it over a soft tee and leaving the top two buttons undone. Take it one step further by adding a knee-length cardigan sweater or vest. Summer dresses become fall weather-proof with a long sleeve shirt underneath. Check out these layer-worthy pieces that can carry you through the changing seasons:

Karen Scott Women’s Cable Knit Duster Cardigan in Autumn Marl
Buy from Macy’s, $49.50
Womens L.L. Bean Sweater Fleece Long Vest in Sailcloth
Buy from L.L. Bean, $59.99-$69.95

Get Colorful and Cozy

Nothing says “fall” quite like deep colors and soft textures. When you’re putting an outfit together, try to incorporate dark, warm tones like brown or maroon that reflect the changing leaves — as an added bonus, dark colors tend to be more forgiving, as they absorb light and suggest a smoother and leaner silhouette. You can also experiment with shades of purple, marigold, pink, black, camel, and blue: these are the “it” colors for Fall 2022, at least according to Marie Claire. Consider incorporating fun patterns like plaids and floral motifs into your style mix, and accessorize with a leather or suede purse to elevate the look. Mixing soft fabrics like flannel and wool into your outfits will also make them feel more season-appropriate, as well as add interest and dimension. Turn over a new “leaf” (get it?) by adding these autumnal pieces to the mix:

Liz Claiborne Womens Regular Fit Ankle Pant in Black Plaid

Fringe Hem Sweater in Bronze Harvest
Buy from Coldwater Creek, $49.95-$59.95

Stay Comfy

If you feel comfortable in what you’re wearing, you will radiate confidence and beauty. No matter what the current trends might be, it’s important to dress in whatever makes you feel the best! As fashion designer Fe Noel tells Harper’s Bazaar, “Only keep things in your closet that make you feel really good … it’s a process and takes time, but it is a genius concept … spend less time worrying about your size number, and instead focus on the way garments fit your body type.” Those are words of wisdom we can all live by.
