Pisces and Aquarius Compatibility in Love and Friendship

This pairing just needs to have a little bit of patience.

So, you’re an Aquarius trying to get a read on your mysterious new Pisces neighbor. She’s friendly, but she never really shares much about herself, and you’re feeling stumped. Or perhaps you’re the Pisces, and you can’t tell whether your Aquarius coworker is being cold to you or if that’s just how she is.  Either way, you’ve come to the right place. Astrology is one of our best tools for understanding and empathizing with each other, no matter how different our approaches to problem solving and life. (Spoiler alert: When it comes to Pisces and Aquarius, those approaches are pretty darn different.) So sit back and relax as we walk you through everything you need to know about Pisces and Aquarius compatibility in both love and friendship.

Attributes of an Aquarius

While no two signs are the same, innovative and independent Aquarius is truly unique among the signs of the zodiac. Born between January 20th and February 18th, Aquarians are a breath of fresh air in the cosmic tapestry. They see the world through a totally unique lens, often challenging conventional wisdom and embracing progressive ideas long before they’re accepted by the mainstream. Picture a starlit night sky twinkling with endless possibilities —that’s the spirit of an Aquarius.

That highly original spirit is largely influenced by Aquarius’s ruling planet, Uranus, which also governs innovation, surprises and technology. It’s no wonder these air signs are often equated with invention and genius. Galileo and Thomas Edison were both Aquarians, as was Peggy Whitson, the first female astronaut to command the International Space Station. One thing about an Aquarius? They’re always going to be leading the charge to create the next great invention, or shatter a previously untouchable glass ceiling. As far as Aquarius is concerned, nothing is impossible — it just hasn’t been done yet (at least not by them).

One of the most endearing traits of an Aquarius is their genuine love for humanity. They are the true humanitarians of the zodiac, with a deep desire to make the world a better place for everyone else by fighting for the marginalized and oppressed. To onlookers who know them primarily for their cold focus and quirky aloofness, this compassion and empathy may come as a shock. But that’s an Aquarian’s whole M.O.: No matter how well we think we’ve got them figured out, they come back and surprise us again.

Pisces personality traits

Born between February 19th and March 20th, Pisces are the dreamers of the zodiac, navigating the seas of life largely by intuition. They’re symbolized by two fish swimming in opposite directions, and it doesn’t take much time in the company of a Pisces to realize how spot-on this emblem is – these water signs are almost always only half-present, part of their mind constantly drifting through their imagination and the realm of the subconscious. If Cancers are an overflowing river and Scorpios are the stormy seas, then Pisceans are the depths of the ocean, bottomless and mysterious.

Pisces make excellent mediums and psychics for this very reason. Their innate understanding of the human soul allows them to perceive emotions that elude others, including emotions from beyond the grave. Got a friend who’s always seemed a little… clairvoyant? Chances are, she’s a Pisces.

Pisceans are great listeners and kind souls, exactly the kind of person you want by your side when experiencing a loss or going through a tough time. They’re also deeply creative, able to channel their emotions and imagination into art, music and storytelling. Of all the signs of the zodiac, Pisceans are the most likely to be described as “visionary.” Steve Jobs, the legendary founder of Apple, was a Pisces. So is Simone Biles, the gymnast currently shattering every record in her sport.

Pisces and Aquarius Compatibility in Friendship

Okay, we’ve got a baseline understanding of each sign in this partnership — now what are they like together?

Although Pisces and Aquarius are right next to each other on the zodiac wheel, in many ways, these two signs couldn’t be further apart. As air signs, Aquarians are constantly thinking, plotting, and acting, and are often perceived as emotionally detached or cold by outsiders. On the other hand, water sign Pisces is often submerged in the depths of their subconscious, or just treading water to try to stay afloat amid their deeply-held feelings. So when it comes to their method of processing their emotions and the world around them, these two are pretty different.

Initially, these differences might be appealing. To moody Pisces, spending time with action-oriented Aquarius can be thrilling and exciting. From Aquarius’s point of view, Pisces is mysterious and mercurial, and adds an unexpected layer of emotional depth to their world. On an acquaintance or surface level, this friendship can be wildly intriguing to both Pisces and Aquarius.

But once these two break past that initial level of intimacy to a deeper relationship, it’s anyone’s guess how the friendship will go. They’re just so different — aside from being of different elements, Pisces is a mutable sign, while Aquarius is fixed, which means they have entirely different perspectives on problem-solving and towards how they choose to exist in the world. With these two, it’s nearly impossible to predict how they’ll get along in the long run without more detailed information from their respective birth charts.

Just like in friendship, the fact that Pisces and Aquarius are so different from each other can spark a strong initial attraction. Opposites attract, after all, and there’s no denying the chemistry when these two get together for the first time. There’s a mystery for each one — for Pisces, it’s in the way Aquarius is able to see clearly, without the fog of their emotions or “what if?”’s getting in the way. For Aquarius, it’s how deeply in tune Pisces is with themself, always letting their intuition and instincts lead the way.

However, it isn’t likely to be long before those very same differences become a wedge driving these two apart. When Aquarius faces an obstacle or challenge, their immediate response is to leap into problem-solving mode. What action steps can they take to improve the situation? Who can they loop in to help solve the problem? Meanwhile, intuition-driven Pisces prefers to take a backseat and suss out the circumstances before deciding what to do about them. Rather than lead by logic, their choices come directly from the heart, and to analytical Aquarius, this tendency can be frustrating and confusing.

To get a read on how this relationship will shake out in the long run, it once again goes back to each person’s individual birth chart. Does the Aquarius in question have a strong listening ear? If so, perhaps they’ll be able to set their natural action-oriented tendencies aside and make space for their sentimental partner. Is the Pisces especially gifted at communication? If yes, maybe they’ll be able to express their needs more clearly and avoid getting bogged down in the swamp of their psyche, where even their partner can’t reach them.
