Courtney Cook’s ‘Dumpling’ Pasta Is a Genius Flavor Shortcut

Cup-shaped pasta stands in for dumpling wrappers in this savory, umami-packed dish!

Got a hankering for dumplings but short on time? Courtney Cook’s ‘Dumpling’ Pasta is the genius shortcut you need! Courtney—social media sensation and high school English teacher—loves to experience all the flavors of Japan (like pork dumplings) right at home. She uses cup-shaped orecchiette pasta as the dumpling “wrapper” in this dish, delivering all those craveable flavors without the folding. Savory pork and cabbage get infused with garlic, ginger, and sesame oil, then tossed with perfectly crispy orecchiette for that satisfying dumpling-like bite in every forkful. A drizzle of Kewpie mayo, Japanese BBQ sauce and a dusting of Furikake take this dish over the top. “I also love a generous dusting of Furikake—an umami blend of seaweed and sesame seeds that makes the whole dish look absolutely gorgeous,” Courtney shares!

In large nonstick skillet, brown the pork and onion in sesame oil. Add garlic, ginger and white pepper. Fry for 2 min. Then, add chopped scallions and cabbage. Add soy sauce and continue frying on high-ish heat for 2–3 min. until you get some crispy bits. Add cooked pasta to large bowl; add pork mixture and toss well to combine. Top with a generous amount of Kewpie mayo and, if desired, other suggested toppings.

Optional: To finish, drizzle with a zigzag of Kewpie mayonnaise, Japanese barbecue sauce, a little sweet chili sauce and more scallions. "I also love a generous dusting of Furikake—an umami blend of seaweed and sesame seeds that makes the whole dish look absolutely gorgeous." As a delicious suggestion, adding french-fried onions provides a fabulous crunch, giving every bite that perfect, fried-dumpling-like finish.
