The Fridays weight loss program begins like many other online GLP-1 prescribers with an eligibility quiz. Once you’re approved, Fridays will set up a video visit to get your GLP-1 prescription filled. However, you may not need a video visit depending on what state you live in.

The telehealth provider says that, “Those who qualify are: Individuals with overweight (BMI > 27) or obesity (BMI > 30) and those who are seeking maintenance therapy that have a BMI > 22 and if their current BMI < 27, have a history of obesity or overweight and have previously been on a GLP-1 within the past 12 months.”

However, they cannot guarantee every patient will qualify, so it’s best if you reach out to see if you do. With that in mind, your assigned doctor will go over your health goals, medical history, order lab tests if needed and prescribe medication if you qualify. They will essentially set up a health plan for you to help you lose weight.

You’ll then need to select your prescription type and subscription service (compounded GLP-1 or GLP-1/GIP protocol) and register for your online account. Thankfully, Fridays is available in almost every state. A brand representative says that the weight loss program is available in “all 50 states except for Louisiana due to state pharmacy regulations. ”

Fridays weight loss offers two weight loss medication options: Compounded GLP-1 and compounded GLP-1/GIP. According to the brand representative, GLP-1 has the “same active ingredient as Ozempic & Wegovy (semaglutide)” and GLP-1/GIP has the “same active ingredients as Mounjaro & Zepbound (tirzepatide).”

The FDA recently announced that state-licensed pharmacies need to stop compounding GLP-1 medication. I asked how Fridays will adapt to these new regulations and they told me:

“While compounded GLP-1s are not FDA-approved, they have been permitted under federal guidance during times of brand-name shortages. We continuously evaluate the legal and clinical landscape and work with licensed U.S. compounding pharmacies that meet regulatory and quality standards. As rules evolve, we adapt quickly to maintain access and safety for our patients.”

“When appropriate and based on medical review by a licensed provider, prescriptions can be provided for personalized compounded versions of GLP-1 and GLP-1/GIP.”

Pricing for compounded GLP-1 is $249 per month if you pay on a month-to-month plan or $233 per month if you pay upfront for three months ($699 total). The compounded GLP-1/GIP protocol is $359 per month, or $333 per month ($999 total). Both plans include the medication, unlimited provider visits, labs through Quest Diagnostics, coaching and a SESH fitness program

Fridays does not offer name-brand medications like Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro or Zepbound, which is why the pricing is much more affordable than paying out of pocket for the name-brand options. Expect to pay at least $500-$1,000 for name-brand GLP-1s without health insurance.

According to the Fridays brand representative, “Fridays Health began as a collaboration between two longtime friends and healthcare professionals — Sina Arham, a dentist and serial healthcare founder, and Dr. Weiss Surkhabi, a dual board-certified physician in family and obesity medicine.”

Since treating the first patient in November 2023, Fridays has rapidly grown through social media education posts and word of mouth.

Fridays Health is a full-circle program

Fridays told us that they decided to go into weight loss medication because they say firsthand how people living with excess weight are dismissed or marginalized in the healthcare system. Patients often face long wait times and overly simplistic advice.

The brand says, “Dr. Weiss built his career around equitable care for patients with obesity, and I was motivated by a family history of metabolic disease. We saw GLP-1 medications as a breakthrough but noticed a lack of support systems around them.”

Fridays is a white-label telehealth provider

Like many companies offering GLP-1 medication, Fridays is a white-label telehealth provider under OpenLoop Healthcare Partners. This means that Fridays uses a third-party company (in this case, OpenLoop Healthcare Partners) to manage patients, their website and other important details instead of building everything from the ground up.

Fridays has over 2,200 reviews and a 4.5-star rating on TrustPilot, which they proudly display on their website. However, as a prior manager at a reputation management firm, I’ve found online reviews and sites are not always trustworthy (even with a name like TrustPilot!). For example, I appreciate their numerous patient testimonials, but when Fridays compensates them for their review, you should take them with a grain of salt. From Fridays’ website:

Fridays weight loss has LegitScript Certification

Fridays is a verified telemedicine and pharmacy website through the LegitScript certification process. This is important because it ensures that online pharmacies and telemedicine companies comply with all applicable laws. Payment service providers may also require their telemedicine providers to have LegitScript certification.

While Fridays says it will work with patients whether or not they have insurance, I asked how coverage works. The brand representative says “Fridays does not bill insurance directly. However, we provide receipts and documentation so patients can submit to their plans for reimbursement for FSA/HSA. This helps us avoid delays and denials while still supporting access to care.”

“We are also able to provide prior authorization and appeal support to help patients gain coverage for brand name medications under their insurance plans. “

Regarding name-brand medication like Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro and Zepbound, one of Fridays’ customer service representatives told me, “We do not offer insurance help for those. We can do a prior authorization for brand-name medication while you are starting on compounded medication. We could then switch if you are approved to a brand-name plan in month 2 for $99/mo.”

“Patients can submit receipts to their insurance or health savings plans. We provide pre-filled receipts on request to make that easier.”
