Given all the recent crossovers within the Sarah J. Maas universe, fans have been wondering: “Is this finally when she returns to the Throne of Glass world?” After all, who wouldn’t want to see a team-up including Aelin from Throne of Glass, Feyre from A Court of Thorns and Roses (ACOTAR) and Bryce from Crescent City? But will it actually happen? Below, we share what Maas has teased about a possible return to the Throne of Glass world.

How many ‘Throne of Glass’ books are there?

Throne of Glass was Maas’ debut series, and it introduced readers to one of fantasy’s most unforgettable heroines. The story follows Celaena Sardothien, a deadly assassin forced to compete in a brutal competition hosted by the evil king. Victory means the freedom she’s desperately longed for. Defeat? Well, dark forces are stirring within the palace walls and they are ancient, powerful and far more dangerous than any competitor. Not even Celaena, with all her lethal skills, may be strong enough to survive what’s coming.

The series spans seven books—Throne of Glass, Crown of Midnight, Heir of Fire, Queen of Shadows, Empire of Storms, Tower of Dawn and Kingdom of Ash—plus one prequel novella, The Assassin’s Blade.

“I first got the inspiration for Throne of Glass by listening to a piece of music from Disney’s Cinderella score. I thought the music that plays when she flees the ball, and the whole scene, to be honest, was really, really dark and intense—my imagination, not surprisingly, made the jump to ‘Well, what if she had done something really bad?’” Maas told Good Reading magazine in 2022. “Then I went one step further and asked: ‘What if she was an assassin who tried to kill the Prince?’ And so Throne of Glass was born. As I wrote over those 10 years and explored more of that assassin’s world, it became its own story, not a straight-up retelling, though Cinderella was the original spark!”

‘Throne of Glass’ series order

Since the prequel novella, The Assassin’s Blade, was released between books one and two (Throne of Glass and Crown of Midnight) and there are two tandem novels (Empire of Storms and Tower of Dawn), fans have always wondered in what order they should read the series.

Some think it should be in timeline order, whereas others think it should be in publication order. And according to the books’ publisher, Bloomsbury, the latter works best.

“We recommend reading in publication order, which means you read The Assassin’s Blade after Crown of Midnight. The Assassin’s Blade is a collection of prequel novellas that take place before the events of Throne of Glass, and the novellas feature characters and locations that appear in later books in the series—so it’s helpful to read before moving on to Heir of Fire,” reads their website. “Reading Tower of Dawn first would spoil some parts of Empire of Storms.”

Will there be any more ‘Throne of Glass’ books?

As it stands, Maas has no official plans to return to the Throne of Glass world. She has put some Easter eggs from the series in her other works, but she has no official plans to write another novel. If she were to do so, Maas said it might focus on what Lorcan Salvaterre and Elide Lochan did at the end of Kingdom of Ash
