There’s no predicting what, when, how or why something will go viral on social media platforms like TikTok—they simply just do. Audio from obscure films or television series and songs that went under the radar at the time of their release have blown up decades after they first hit the airwaves thanks to the rapid spread on platforms of this nature, and that’s exactly what happened for 87-year-old Connie Francis shortly before she sadly passed away on July 16. Known for songs like “Stupid Cupid,” “Everybody’s Somebody’s Fool” and “Who’s Sorry Now,” Francis had a career revival she never expected thanks to the mass circulation of her 1962 song “Pretty Little Baby.” After her passing, we reflect on the life and legacy she left behind.

Connie Francis dies at 87

Earlier today, Connie’s friend Ron Roberts shared a post to Facebook announcing Connie’s passing. “It is with a heavy heart and extreme sadness that I inform you of the passing of my dear friend Connie Francis last night. I know that Connie would approve that her fans are among the first to learn of this sad news. More details will follow later,” he wrote. The news of her death comes after a post Connie herself shared earlier this month detailing some health issues she was experiencing. “I am back in hospital where I have been undergoing tests and checks to determine the cause(s) of the extreme pain I have been experiencing,” going on to say that she had planned to partake in a performance alongside her cousin but had to cancel.

Many took to the comments of Ron Roberts’ post shared to Connie’s page to share fond memories they have of the singer, as well as share their condolences. “Connie has been ’with’ me since 1956 when I was just six years old. Through her music she helped me through bad times and encouraged me through good times. Her Italian recordings helped me learn Italian and I treasure the correspondence received from her,” wrote one user. “I am so sad to read this news about the passing of Connie Francis. She was such a wonderful singer and lady. I have good memories growing up listening to her music! My dad had her albums in the 60s & would play them for me and my sister. May she rest in peace,” shared another.

Connie Francis reacted to ‘Pretty Little Baby’ going viral

Back in May, Francis took to Facebook to share a Billboard article written about her resurfaced hit. “My thanks to TikTok and its members for the wonderful, and oh so unexpected, reception given to my 1961 recording ‘Pretty Little Baby’,” she wrote in the Facebook post. “The first I learned of it was when Ron called to advise me that I had ‘a viral hit.’ Clearly out of touch with present day music statistics terminology, my initial response was to ask: ‘What’s that?’ Thank you everyone!”

In response to her post, many commented to share their love with the singer. “Connie, I am so thrilled for you with this unexpected surprise! I don’t follow TikTok either, but it is so amazing that the younger crowd is learning all about your one-of-a-kind songs and talent. Enjoy the recognition,” wrote one user. “Love it when icons of yesteryear get to watch their songs still get so much love all these years later. Connie deserves her flowers!,” wrote another.

In a separate statement, the singer further expressed her gratitude, saying, “I am thrilled and overwhelmed at the success of ‘Pretty Little Baby.’ I recorded that song 63 years ago and to know that an entire new generation now knows who I am, and my music is thrilling for me. Thank you so much everybody, thank you TikTok.”
