From 1971 to 1977, Diana Ross was married to music executive Robert Ellis Silberstein, who not only managed her career but also worked with artists like the Rolling Stones, Billy Preston and Status Quo. While the couple kept much of their private life out of the spotlight, they welcomed two children during their six-year marriage, including Emmy-nominated actress Tracee Ellis Ross.

“My mom was extremely present,” Tracee told InStyle magazine in 2022.  “Waking us up for school, sitting for dinner with us and giving us a genuine, anchored, real family life and home life. The most important thing to my mother was not fame, it was her children.”

“Culturally, young girls are taught to dream of their wedding and not the life they want to be living or the people they want to become,” she continued. “And I was not spared that messaging as a child—not from my mom or my dad, but from the world that we lived in. I spent a lot of time dreaming of my wedding. I can only imagine how much more I would’ve dreamt of—or how much sooner I would’ve got to some of my dreams—had we been in the conversation that we’re in now, had I had people like myself and others to hear from as different examples of how to cultivate happiness and joy and a life that matches you.”

Silberstein is 79 years old and has never remarried.

Diana Ross and Arne Naess, Jr.: a love that still inspires her family

Ross married businessman Arne Naess, Jr. in 1985, and the couple had two children before divorcing in 2000 after it was revealed that he had been unfaithful. Naess died in an accident four years later, a loss that continues to weigh on the family. Their son Evan reflected on his father’s influence in a 2018 episode of Ashlee + Evan, saying, “I feel like one of the biggest things I got from my father growing up was, ‘You can face certain fears,’ and no matter what, I can push through.”

“You wanna make sure you remember everything. You don’t want it to become a distant memory,” Evan continued. “I would’ve liked him to have met my wife and my daughter… he was good with women and he was special.”

Aside from a romance with actor Jon Voight in 2006, Ross has not publicly dated anyone. Instead, she’s opted to focus on her musical career and life as both a mother and a grandmother.

“Health and wellbeing and my family is equally everything to me. I like staying busy. Because I love what I do, it keeps me grounded. I’m swimming a lot lately to stay flexible. I must get some sleep, which is important to me. I do my best to eat well, but I do like Häagen-Dazs ice cream,” she told People magazine in June of this year. “I just want to be in [my grandchildren’s] presence. I want them to see me, and I want to be able to see them. If I’m needed, for sure I will babysit. Being with my grandkids means everything to me. If spoiling them means loving them—Yes! I do that, I do a lot of that.”

“Whenever we can vacation together, we usually go towards the ocean, we all like the sun. At Christmas time we usually go to my home in Connecticut, or we may go skiing. But whenever I can find time or find a way that I can keep my family together on holidays, it’s usually on the beach,” she continued. “We recently took a trip to the Caribbean. I was surrounded by the joy of my adult children and grandkids splashing in the water and running around with each other on the sand. These are picture-perfect moments.”
