We all love a good Cadbury egg this time of year, but a man took his fandom too far when he stole more than 300 Cadbury Creme Eggs from a gas station Saturday. After making off with more than 200 British pounds (about $275) worth of the seasonal snacks, his arrest was caught on video. Keep reading for all the details on the incident and to see the moment the thief was caught by police.

The man who stole over 300 Cadbury Creme Eggs

Police arrested 26-year-old Deon De Groot after he entered a Tesco Express on Welland Road, Dogsthorpe, Peterborough, UK, right before noon on March 22 and was seen putting chocolate eggs into a duffle bag.

De Groot allegedly packed £220.50 in Cadbury Creme Eggs and left the store without paying, said Cambridgeshire Constabulary per The Independent

A staff member at the station notified law enforcement in a passing police car, and the cops began to follow De Groot. When they confronted him, they found he had a large portion of the stolen treats hidden in his jacket and had ditched the duffle bag filled with boxes of Creme Eggs nearby.

De Groot, who the outlet said has “no fixed address,” appeared at Peterborough Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday and reportedly admitted to theft from a shop.

He was sentenced to 12 weeks in prison, suspended for a year and banned from entering the county of Cambridgeshire for the next three months, said the publication.

“Thanks to the quick reaction by staff who flagged us down, we were able to catch De Groot red-handed and return the stolen items to the store,” said police constable Guy Cunningham, who was the arresting officer.

Police body cam footage offers a look at the moment De Groot was confronted by officers. Cunningham can be heard telling De Groot (whose face is blurred out) to put his hands up as he was under arrest for “suspicion of theft of shop.”

Cunningham then points to De Groot’s jacket, which is clearly covering something, and asks, “What have you got in there?”

“Got cream eggs,” De Groot responds, adding, “It’s all gonna fall out,” when Cunningham begins to unzip the jacket.

Officers can then be seen apprehending box after box of creme eggs from De Groot’s jacket as he stands handcuffed.
