Caution: Saddle-sized spoilers ahead

Snow is falling and so are the Duttons’ hopes and dreams in season 2, episode 2 of 1923. Desperate to get Zane Davis (Brian Geraghty) home, Jacob Dutton (Harrison Ford) makes a rash decision to house him and his “illegal” family. Elsewhere, Spencer (Brandon Sklenar) and Alexandra Dutton (Julia Schlaepfer) are doing everything they can to reunite at the Montana ranch, which is currently being held captive by a wolf, and Father Renaud’s (Sebastian Roché) manhunt turns even more deadly.

The episode—entitled “The Rapist Is Winter”—is truly a wild ride from start to finish, which is why we have summarized it and found out what you might have missed below. Grab your shot glasses and guns because this one was a doozy.

Elsa Dutton is back and better than ever

Elsa Dutton (Isabel May) first appeared in the other hit Yellowstone prequel, 1883, as the daughter of Margaret (Faith Hill) and James Dutton (Tim McGraw). She is also the sister of John Dutton Sr. (James Badge Dale) and Spencer Dutton (Brandon Sklenar), who are in 1923, making her voiceover appearances—like the one in episode 2—on the show that much sweeter!

Sadly, since Elsa died at the end of 1883, viewers will only receive voice-overs going forward—unless she comes back as a ghost.

Father Renaud is getting desperate

Following Teonna Rainwater‘s (Aminah Nieves) murder-filled departure in season 1, Father Renaud (Sebastian Roché) decides that the best thing for him to do is embark on a journey alongside Marshal Kent (Jamie McShane) to find her. In episode 2, that means traveling to Oklahoma and meeting up with newcomer Marshal Mamie Fossett (Jennifer Carpenter) and killing a bunch of Native Americans along the way, all in a desperate effort to discover where Teonna has been.

Much like Father Renaud’s past storylines, this one is filled with violence and racist actions and is not for the faint of heart.

Zane Davis is depressed and dead to the world

Following his arrest at the end of season 1, fans have been anxiously waiting to see what Zane Davis is going to do next. And now we finally have our answer: he is going to live with Jacob Dutton at the ranch alongside his wife and kids.  However, he has to get better first.

In episode 2, Zane is seen lying in a mental hospital, unable to move. Even so, Jacob is still as determined as ever to get Zane home. Soon, they set off on the treacherous journey back to the ranch, which ends with them lying under their wagon to avoid the deadly winter storm.

Will they live, or will they die? Only time—and episode 3—will tell.

Elizabeth Dutton just can’t seem to catch a break

While trapped at the ranch, Elizabeth Dutton (Michelle Randolph) is bitten by a wolf and forced by Cara (Helen Mirren) to get a rabies shot. Naturally, she freaks out, tarnishing her relationship with her great-aunt-in-law.

It is truly a heart-rending storyline, especially once you remember that Elizabeth had a miscarriage in season 1, meaning that all of her medical decisions up to this point on the show haven’t been her own.

To make matters worse, at the end of the episode, the wolf breaks back into the house, and viewers are left to wonder if anyone will make it out alive.

Alexandra and Spencer are one step closer to reuniting

Finally, in episode 2, we see both Spencer and Alexandra continue on their trek, hoping to reunite in Montana.

For Spencer, that means putting his trust in a Texas-based Italian family who makes their money smuggling booze. Meanwhile, a pregnant Alexandra must battle the unsteady Atlantic Ocean while trapped on a boat headed toward New York City at the tourist-class level. And while they may be on different sides of the country, we do not doubt that these two lovebirds will be reunited soon.

Season 2 of 1923 is available to stream every Sunday at midnight EST on Paramount+
