The Whoniverse—the worlds spawned from the BBC’s long-running Doctor Who television series—will continue to expand in the upcoming spinoff series, The War Between the Land and the Sea, starring Russell Tovey and Gugu Mbatha-Raw. After nearly six decades of the original series, the new spinoff is changing course by shining a light on another featured race: the Sea Devils.

Find out how this upcoming show is related to the original Doctor Who!

How are the two shows connected?

The War Between the Land and the Sea was created by Russell T. Davies, who has served as showrunner of the Doctor Who revival from 2005 until 2010, and returned to that role in 2021. The writer has been immersed in the Whoniverse for some time, so when when the opportunity aroseto create this series, he’d already had some ideas brewing.

The Sea Devils first appeared in the Whoniverse in 1972 in the third serial of the ninth season of Doctor Who. These are an ancient reptilian species that ruled the Earth before humans, but went into hibernation to survive a catastrophe that was on the horizon. They re-emerged to reclaim the planet as their own after being reawakened by the Master, who wanted to use them as an army to conquer the world.

When they first approached me about coming back to Doctor Who in 2021, this was the first bit of my pitch,” Davies explained. “I had this idea separately first. But weirdly, it needs the Doctor Who setting. If I just go and pitch this cold, saying, ‘There is a race of creatures that live in the sea,’ they’d say, ‘Really? You sure?’ The pre-existence of the Sea Devils takes all the problems out of it.”

This new series was created to be a modern re-imagination of the original story from 1972, but rather than being a straight continuation, The War Between the Land and the Sea will use the details of the original to create a more contemporary version.

I wanted to show the BBC what this universe is capable of,” Davies shared of the connection between the shows. “And the potential that it has, and the punch that it can deliver.”

About ‘The War Between the Land and the Sea’

While this new series will utilize a pre-existing story and race, it will be a standalone story from whatever occurred in Doctor Who

The official plot of The War Between the Land and the Sea series reads: “When a fearsome and ancient species emerges from the ocean, dramatically revealing themselves to humanity, an international crisis is triggered. With the entire population at risk, UNIT steps into action as the land and sea wage war.”
