When it comes to beloved historical fiction series, few hold a candle to Poldark. Led by the hunky Aidan Turner, the dashing actor brought to life the title character of Ross Poldark, a redcoat who makes his way back home in the wake of the Revolutionary War—though things are far different from the way he left them. His father has passed during the time he is gone, his estate is in shambles and the woman he left behind has moved on, promised to his cousin. When things looked as though they couldn’t get any worse, he meets the fiery Demelza and things take a turn. Based on the Poldark novels by Winston Graham, this story of romance and adventure was a fan favorite from 2015 to 2019. Here, take a look at life when the cameras weren’t rolling on the Poldark set.
Aidan Turner captures the moment
Head-to-toe in Ross Poldark garb, Aidan Turner snaps a quick photo on the set of the series. “It struck me that Ross is a real man–not a heroic, legendary guy who comes into town and is the people’s hero, like Robin Hood,” Turner said of his character to The Guardian back in 2016. “There’s a lot wrong with Ross, which is what I love about him–that he’s a multitude of ups and downs and rights and wrongs. And I don’t think he knows where he’s at half the time.”

One of our favorite historical fiction couples came from this show, and the way in which their love evolved over the course of the series made for some incredible television!
Past and present
Aidan Turner laughs alongside Robin Ellis, who portrayed Reverend Halse in the series, but did you know he was the original Ross Poldark? In the 1975 BBC adaptation, Ellis was the one who brought the lead character to life!
A trio we love
Richardson and York portrayed the Carne brothers, Demelza’s siblings, with Ellise Chappell portraying the eventual wife of Drake Carne.
Coffee break
Eleanor Tomlinson is all smiles in this snapshot from the set of Poldark. Did you know she was originally cast in the role of Elizabeth? “They told me they couldn’t see me as Demelza at all—they wouldn’t even let me audition,” she told Red. “So it was quite a shock when they eventually offered me the role.”
A darling duo
The chemistry between these two was real! “There’s a lot of love between us and a lot of respect,” Tomlinson told Harper’s Bazaar in 2019. “I’ve spent every day for six months with him for the past five years…you do form this bond. We’ve been each other’s support network and that shows. We have a real commitment to each other. We lean on each other to get through it.”
