‘Star Wars: Starfighter’ Completes Casting Process With Amy Adams, Matt Smith and More
The new Star Wars movie lands in 2027—here’s the cast, plot details and release date.
May the force be with us for when the newest film in the Star Wars franchise drops because this cast is perfect. The upcoming installation, Star Wars: Starfighter, is full of major celebrities and will most certainly be a smash hit.
Earlier this year when the film was announced, it was revealed that Ryan Gosling would be leading the cast. Later, the group began to grow, with Doctor Who’s Matt Smith coming aboard. Who has been cast?
As if Ryan Gosling and Matt Smith weren’t thrilling enough, a few more exciting stars will be appearing alongside them in Star Wars: Starfighter.
Casting has been completed with Flynn Gray, Mia Goth (Pearl and MaXXXine) Aaron Pierre (Rebel Ridge and Old), Simon Bird (The Inbetweeners), Jamael Westman (Anne Boleyn and Good Grief), Daniel Ings (The Gentlemen) and Amy Adams (Enchanted and The Woman In The Window).
The film, which was written by Jonathan Tropper, will be directed by Shawn Levy, who is is best known for his work on Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) as well as Night at the Museum (2006). Tropper has previously worked on Your Friends and Neighbors (2025) and This Is Where I Leave You (2014).
Executive producers for the project include Gosling, Dan Levine, Mary McLaglen and Josh McLaglen.
“From the day Kathy Kennedy (President of Lucasfilm) called me up, inviting me to develop an original adventure in this incredible Star Wars galaxy, this experience has been a dream come true, creatively and personally,” Levy said. “Star Wars shaped my sense of what a story can do, how characters and cinematic moments can live with us forever. To join this storytelling galaxy with such brilliant collaborators onscreen and off, is the thrill of a lifetime.”
What is the plot of ‘Star Wars: Starfighter’?
In typical Star Wars fashion, there is very little information available about the plot of Star Wars: Starfighter. While there are rumors floating around, much of the plot is under wraps. Levy commented on what fans can expect, explaining the movie will be its own story.
“There are many rumors, some true, some not… This is not a prequel, this is not a sequel,” Levy said. “It’s a new adventure.”
One detail that has been made available is that it will be set five years after the events from Star Wars: Episode IX — The Rise of Skywalker (2019).
When is the release date?
The initial announcement for Star Wars: Starfighter came in April 2025 at the Star Wars Celebration event in Tokyo, Japan. Filming for the project just began this week on August 28, 2025 in the United Kingdom.
A release date has already been set for the movie, despite it not yet being filmed. Star Wars: Starfighter is set for its initial release on May 28, 2027.
