Go Behind the Scenes of ‘The Chosen’ Season 5 With the Cast’s Funniest Set Memories (EXCLUSIVE)
The cast of the hit series about Jesus’ life relies on humor to keep the mood light while filming
As fans delight in the drama and heart-racing moments of The Chosen Season 5—a groundbreaking multi-season series that brings the life and ministry of Jesus to the screen through the eyes of those who knew Him best—we’re taking a look inside the making of the iconic show. Woman’s World sat down with the cast to hear some of their favorite behind-the-scenes moments and how humor played a part in their bonding experience while on set.
How humor helped ‘The Chosen’ cast during filming
While filming emotionally taxing scenes, the cast often relied on humor and pranks to keep the set light-hearted. For many of the cast members, the scenes they shot were memorable and left a significant impact on their hearts long after the cameras were cut — but a lot of those unforgettable scenes also left them in stitches.
“One night at 3 a.m., when all of us are talking across a dinner table and Jesus accidentally cuts off Mary Magdalene [portrayed by Elizabeth Tabish],” explains Paras Patel, who plays Matthew. “It was our last day of filming in Season 2. We were all exhausted, and we just lost it. We were trying to all hold it in and say our lines, but tears were running down our faces. I could not get my line out. I was like, ‘Okay, it’s time to wrap it up.’ It’s always the moments where we are belly-ache laughing, which happened several times. That’s what you need when the show is getting more emotional, so those are always the moments I love.”
As for the actual humor caught on camera that ended up in the show, many of those moments were improvised — which speaks to the authentic nature of the rapport between the cast and the real humor Jesus and the disciples would have had some two thousand years ago.

“The show’s writers, Dallas Jenkins, Ryan Swanson and Tyler Thompson have written wonderful moments and there have been some improvised moments,” Jonathan Roumie, who stars as Jesus of Nazareth, says of His sense of humor.
“You can’t really go through life without some kind of sense of humor. Some have it a little stronger than others, obviously, but I think in order to deal with these 12 guys that he dragged along for three years, Jesus would have had an intensely charismatic sense of humor to deal with them all.”

In between takes, even during the most heart-wrenching moments — like at The Last Supper — the cast manages to joke with director Dallas Jenkins and keep the mood upbeat and fun.

Why ‘The Chosen’ cast is so close off-screen
It’s no secret that traveling around in a pack day and night would warrant a close-knit relationship, and the cast grew just as close throughout the filming process — often by way of practical jokes, making hilarious TikTok videos and sneaky pranks.

“George [H. Xanthis], who plays John, makes fun of us,” says Noah James, who portrays Andrew. “He says, ‘The show could also just be watching Noah and Luke [who plays Judas] yell at each other and love each other at the same time.’”
“It’s a good combination of both,” Luke Dimyan says, “It’s a good yell though!”

When asked what their favorite scene to film, Noah turns to Luke, “Can we say it at the same time? 1, 2, 3…”
“Walking on water!” the duo says together.
“It was so incredible,” Noah explains. “As a kid, I would dream about doing something like that. Then in the middle of it, as we’re just soaking wet, it’s like 2 in the morning, we’re rowing and it sounds like the orcs are behind us from Lord of the Rings, and we’re like, ‘We are living our dreams.’
“Even just thinking about the scene makes me emotional,” Roumie says of the action-packed moment in the show.
‘The Chosen’ cast keeps it light on set
One thing about the guys is they don’t mind ratting each other out for a good TikTok trend. In one video, Jordan Walker Ross, who plays Little James, says Noah is more likely to spend money on useless stuff…

But when voting for the biggest prankster? The whole cast resoundingly votes for Jordan. His own TikTok series is proof.

“I’ve actually got a partner in crime,” says Jordan of Luke’s help with the prank on Austin Reed Alleman, who portrays Nathaniel, “Which is perfect that Judas is helping me out with this.”
While their jokes and pranks keep the mood on set light-hearted and keep fans entertained on social media, their talent and acting chops shine through in the passionate and unforgettable scenes in Season 5.
