This Picnic Was Made Up Entirely of Cake—613 of Them to Be Exact! Watch the Epic Video
People from all over the country gathered for this sweet celebration!
Nothing brings people together quite like food does, and if you consider yourself a sweets lover, then it’s in your best interest to keep your eyes peeled for the next time a Cake Picnic hits your area. This sugary celebration that took place last weekend in San Francisco is pretty much exactly what it sounds like: hundreds of people from all over the United States flocked to San Francisco’s Legion of Honor Museum to attend the Cake Picnic, organized by Elisa Sunga. The rules are simple, and the event itself is something of a potluck: bring a cake, enjoy the Cake Picnic. Whether you bought one from the store or spent hours bringing your creation to life, the entry fee is a small price to pay for all that the event provided—613 cakes to choose from, that is.
People brought their all when it came time to participate in the event. Multiple tiered cakes, homemade frostings, unique flavor combinations and more lined the tables on the lawn of this museum, who actually reached out to Sunga to hold the event there in honor of their 100th birthday.
How the Cake Picnic brought people together
This particular event received 1000 RSVPs and 300 people were waitlisted. After people registered for the event in advance, they arrived to the exciting day of sweet delight with their cake in tow. Color-coded name tags were handed out, their cakes were set out on the countless tables set up outside the museum, and then, participants had the chance to take a peek at the rest of the cakes that were brought by other attendees.
Groups were invited to test out the cakes based on the color of their name tag, each set of people given five minutes to slice up as many cakes of their choosing to try out—and those that were left unfinished most certainly did not go to waste, many taking extra slices home.
The origins of the Cake Picnic phenomenon
Sunga’s first foray into the Cake Picnic world took place back in April, when she shared to social media information about a cake exchange inspired by the cookie exchanges that often take place around the holidays, in which people bring a sweet treat of their choice for everyone to try out. Anticipating only a handful of participants, Sunga told USA Today that the debut event brought in over 100 cakes—something she had never anticipated. So began this exciting phenomenon she is at the helm of, and since the very first event, she’s taken the cake picnic to cities like Los Angeles and New York.
“CAKE PICNIC was born out of a simple desire to eat a lot of cake. And be surrounded by friends,” Sunga wrote on her website. “In my earliest daydreams of this event, it was a small and intimate picnic of maybe 15 new friends forming a circle at Golden Gate Park. Once we’ve formed our circle, we would take turns introducing ourselves and what cake we brought to the picnic. I had no idea this would draw such a crowd and that everyone would share my dream so passionately. For the love of cake, we must.”
