If you’re anything like us, your social media feeds are littered with posts about “dot cakes,” the viral mini cakes made popular by the New York City grocery store Butterfield Market. People are lining up outside the store in the hopes of scoring one of the highly coveted desserts. But they sell out fast—and not all of us can get there! Enter dupes. Since the dessert took off, several companies have released their own version of the Dot Cake, giving dessert lovers a chance to try the sweet treat. Keep reading to find out when you could potentially get your hands on the real thing, learn the best Dot Cake dupes and grab a simple recipe to make your own!

What is a Dot Cake?

Dot Cakes are a mini dessert featuring soft cake and buttercream, topped with colorful nonpareil or dot sprinkles. At Butterfield market, they cost $13 per cake.

“We thought the cakes were fun, nostalgic, beautiful and genuinely delicious—and our customers immediately connected with them,” a Butterfield Market spokesperson told People magazine. “They’ve always done well for us, but over the past few weeks the demand has exploded.”

Currently, Butterfield restocks the cakes on Wednesdays at 11 a.m. and Saturdays at 1 p.m. There are four flavors: Classic White/Vanilla, Chocolate, Vanilla Chip (Funfetti/Confetti) and Red Velvet, all of which feature the signature sprinkle topping.

“We currently receive about 625 cakes per store on delivery days and they’ve been selling out incredibly quickly—sometimes within an hour,” the spokesperson told People. “It’s been really exciting to watch a product from a local business become such a nationwide viral sensation while still feeling special and personal in our stores.”

Aside from Butterfield, which has two locations in New York City, the bakery that created the treats, The Dotcakes, in Roslyn, New York, sells them. But if you’re purchasing them from there, be warned: They call the desserts Dotcups, not Dotcakes, so they don’t get confused with the full-sized versions of the cake.

“It tastes like a funfetti cake with a lot of crunch,” influencer Danielle Pheloung said in her Dotcake review on TikTok. “It’s really, really, really, really, really good.”

When it comes to mini treats, Baked by Melissa is the original, with mini cupcakes in countless flavors. There’s also Nothing Bundt Cakes, a chain bakery that selles mini Bundt cakes (called Bundtinis), but since the rise in Dot Cake popularity, several stores and bakeries have begun selling their own versions of the cake. As with many viral trends, people have begun making their own Dot Cakes at home. You can find been a variety of recipes online, but our Food Director, Julie Miltenberger, says you can do it with a box mix cake and canned frosting for an extra-easy DIY. Here’s how:

Prepare a box of Pillsbury Funfetti cake and bake according to directions for a 13 X 9 inch pan, then use a 3-inch round cookie cutter to cut 10 to 12 circles from the cooled cake. For each cake, place one layer in a 6-oz. ramekin and cover with frosting. Use a butter knife or offset spatula to smooth the surface of the mini cake. Next, pour rainbow nonpareils on a paper plate and dip the cake, frosting down, in the sprinkles to cover the frosting.

Crumbl Is Changing Its Famous Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe

Big changes are coming to Crumbl cookies next week. In a press release, the dessert company announced they are changing their beloved chocolate chip cookie recipe. Below, we share everything you need to know about the new Crumbl chocolate chip cookies, including when they hit stores nationwide.

What to know about the new Crumbl chocolate chip cookie recipe

On Thursday, May 21, Crumbl announced they are launching their new Better Bake Chocolate Chip Cookie. It will replace the brand’s Milk Chocolate Chip, and according to the company, the new cookie is not just a new recipe: “it’s a brand-wide commitment to perfecting the craft, meticulously developed by Crumbl’s founders and culinary team to set a new gold standard.”

They describe the new cookie as a “warm brown sugar cookie loaded with a dual-chocolate blend of melty milk chocolate chips and rich semi-sweet chocolate chunks.”

This is quite different from the original Milk Chocolate Chip Cookie, which they described as “A symphony of flour, sugar, butter, eggs and chocolate.”

A look at other changes coming to Crumbl

Along with the new chocolate chip cookie recipe, Crumbl announced that they are moving from six permanent cookies to four seasonally updated classics and selling their beloved thin cookies every day.

Currently, the permanent cookies include the Milk Chocolate Chip Cookie, the S’mores Cookie, the Pink Sugar Cookie and the Brownie Batter Cookie. All will be available for purchase at any Crumbl location and prices will vary based on your member status location and how many cookies you purchase.

As for the thins, Crumbl plans to rotate the flavors every week as opposed to only selling the thin chocolate chip cookie on what they have named “Thin Thursdays.”

They haven’t shared what the first new one will be, but we’re hoping for a thin Pink Sugar Cookie—this author’s favorite.

Costco Is Quietly Testing a Massive New Food Court Menu Change!

Love grabbing a bite to eat at Costco’s food court when you shop? You may soon notice a new item on the menu. The warehouse chain is currently testing out chicken tenders as a calzone replacement in Chicago locations—and shoppers have thoughts! It’s too soon to tell if the chicken option will be rolled across the U.S., but the news is causing quite the stir. Here’s everything you need to know about this menu shake-up, plus a fun look back at other Costco food court items that have made waves over the years!

What is the new Costco calzone replacement in Chicago?

Loyal Costco customers in Chicago recently spotted an unexpected surprise on the food court menu: chicken tenders! Costco Insider revealed in an Instagram post that Costco is testing a new chicken tenders meal at various stores in the Windy City.

The post, which shows a close-up of the chicken tenders, has a caption that reads, “These are baked, not fried. The meal is extremely filling and we have heard it tastes great too. Dipping sauce is a sweet honey mustard.”

The new offering, which is priced at $6.99, comes with five chicken breast tenders and the sauce. For anyone curious about the nutrition information, the meal contains 1,640 calories.

Though a new menu offering can be exciting, some food court fans might be disappointed by this addition. The reason? Costco is testing the chicken tenders as a replacement for the calzone.

Costco shoppers react to the 1,640-calorie food court menu shake-up

When Costco makes a change to its popular food court menu, customers are always quick to react. Since the calzone is not typically a shopper favorite, few seem bothered by the possibility of it leaving the menu.

Its potential chicken tender replacement, however, is sparking debate online!

Several have expressed their disappointment that the chicken looks “hard and overcooked” based on the photo.

“They’re nothing special…wouldn’t recommend,” added one customer. “Long live the chicken bake.”

Others were excited by the news, despite the fact that the tenders’ high calorie count was off-putting to some.

“I’m never gonna be skinny…” a shopper quipped.

For most, however, it was apparent that nothing will compare to the combo pizza. Several shared their desire to see this option, which was discontinued in 2020, return to the menu.

How to try the new chicken tenders

If you’re on the fence about the calzone replacement, here’s some good news: The chicken tender menu option is still just in the testing phase. It has only been confirmed in Schaumburg, Niles and Lincoln Park locations, with no indication that there will be a national or even regional rollout.

Costco typically monitors sales and customer feedback during test phases before deciding whether to offer new food-court items nationwide. Based on previous menu item testing—things could certainly go either way!

From cheeseburgers to fries: A look back at Costco’s food-court flops

The membership warehouse chain has been testing food court items for years, with some hits—and some massive flops. Here’s a look at some of the additions that never made it past the regional testing stage:

Cheeseburger: The ⅓ pound burger lasted in a few states from 2017 to 2020. Most customers complained about the taste and questioned the cooking method.
French fries: Customers in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Virginia could enjoy hot, fresh spuds before they were pulled in 2025.
Acai bowls: In 2018, shoppers in California, Hawaii and Oregon were able to order the smoothie-style bowls, but the offering never made it to a nationwide release.
Gelato: Hawaii residents could treat themselves to this delicious dessert until Costco removed it for good in 2016.

But not all tested items quietly fizzled out! Some Costco drops hit menus nationwide after success in smaller markets. These include:

Combo calzone: The loaded Italian offering, which includes pepperoni, sausage, cheese, onions, peppers, olives and mushrooms, was initially only available in Midwestern stores.
Chicken bake: This long-time favorite reportedly started at Southern California locations in the 1990s and 2000s and was even made in-house in the early days!
Mango smoothie: First tested in Hawaii, the tropical fruit drink made its way to the mainland in summer 2023. But after poor nationwide reception, Costco began phasing it out just months later in favor of berry smoothies.
Double chocolate chunk cookie: Eagle-eyed customers in the Pacific Northwest started noticing this dessert had replaced the churro in late 2023.

The verdict is still out on the plans for Costco’s new chicken tenders, but it could become a great option for customers looking for a filling meal!
