It’s not uncommon for companies to reverse changes related to their products, stores or restaurants when customers vocalize their displeasure. Last month’s Cracker Barrel hubbub is a prime example of that. Another company that is no stranger to this? The American bakery company Hostess Brands, which has regularly introduced and re-introduced products based on public feedback. Case in point: their famous Suzy Q’s, which have left grocery store shelves numerous times, but are currently back! Indeed, fans who have been desperately searching “Hostess Suzy Q near me” with little success are finally in luck. Find out more about the history of the snack cake and where you can buy them once again.

The history of Hostess Suzy Q’s

These chocolate, cream-filled treats were first introduced in 1961. The moist dark chocolate cakes (similar to devil’s food cake) surround a fluffy white filling layer and are noticeably larger than other brand favorites like Twinkies.

The cakes continued to be beloved by Hostess fans, so it was a surprise when they were discontinued in 2012. Just a few years later, they made a quiet comeback on grocery store shelves, but fans weren’t pleased with the new recipe.

They might as well have even changed the name,” someone commented in 2016. “I am happy for you if you like the new ones. I’ve been waiting for a long time [and] to me it’s a serious let down from the original!!!”

The backlash is likely what led to the products being pulled for a second time. But Hostess decided to give it another try in 2018 and brought Suzy Q’s back once again.

Fans of the snack cakes were able to indulge for a couple more years until Suzy Q’s were discontinued quietly in 2020. The reason for this is unknown: maybe manufacturing issues during the pandemic led to the decision or maybe the cakes weren’t selling very well. (Twinkies, for example, stopped being made in 2012 due to Hostess filing for bankruptcy.)

Fans demand the return of Suzy Q’s

In March 2025, the company shared a Facebook post encouraging those who wanted a “snackie” to pick up a Twinkie. The replies, however, were filled with people sharing how they’d rather have a Suzy Q.

“What about a Suzy Q?” someone asked. “You brought them back and then they disappeared again!”

Others chimed in to inquire when and if they’d be able to buy Suzy Q’s in the near future.

Hostess Suzy Q’s are back

Now there’s good news for those who have been looking to treat themselves to a Suzy Q: The treats are available once again! In February, Sporked.com shared that Hostess would be bringing back the fan favorite.

Hostess confirmed the snack cake would be in stores again via replies on Facebook. “We’re excited to share that Suzy Qs will soon be making their return,” the company wrote. “Please keep an eye on the Hostess site and social channels for further details, including timing and availability.”

Despite the snack cakes already being spotted in stores, Hostess has not made a formal announcement on social media alerting customers that they can now snatch them off grocery store shelves.

The “mega-sized” cakes are back to being listed on the Hostess website, and the boxes even highlight that the “The Favorite Is Back!” to draw even more attention to their return.

Hopefully, fans will be pleased with the recipe this time. Hostess promises that “every bite takes you through two big, fluffy layers of chocolate cake to a generous layer of creamy filling in between.”

For anyone searching “Hostess Suzy Q’s near me” online, the company website makes it easy to track down the snack cakes. Simply click on “find product” on the page and enter your ZIP code. You’ll be provided with a list of stores in the area that are carrying Suzy Q’s.

The roll-out does appear to be limited right now, with Walmart seemingly being the only national chain to carry Suzy Q’s. Other smaller grocery store chains like Meijer (which operates in six Midwestern states) have them on their shelves too, so you might get lucky finding a box of the snack cakes at other lesser-known stores near you.
