If you’ve never had Muddy Buddies before, get ready to become obsessed. This classic childhood snack features crispy rice or corn cereal coated in a mixture of melted chocolate, peanut butter and butter. Then you toss everything in powdered sugar for that irresistible finish. It’s crunchy, sweet and a little messy—but that’s part of the fun! Some people call it Puppy Chow, especially in the Midwest, since it visibly resembles dog kibble. But don’t worry—it tastes far from it. No matter what name you use, one thing’s for sure: it’s dangerously good.

Ingredients you’ll need

This recipe keeps it simple with ingredients you probably already have in your pantry:

  • Rice or corn cereal (like Chex)
  • Semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • Peanut butter (creamy works best!)
  • Unsalted butter
  • Vanilla extract
  • Powdered sugar

Why you’ll love this recipe

Muddy Buddies are a dream for anyone who loves an easy, satisfying snack. Not only are they quick to whip up—taking just 15 minutes from start to finish—but they also require zero baking. Just melt, mix, shake and enjoy! Their sweet-salty flavor and crispy texture make them perfect for parties (like the Super Bowl), gifting or simply munching by the handful. Plus, they’re easy to customize with different flavors and mix-ins, so you can always switch things up.

Fun variations to try

While the classic recipe is hard to beat, there are plenty of fun ways to switch it up:

  • Nut-free option: Use sunflower seed butter instead of peanut butter.
  • Extra add-ins: Add crushed pretzels, M&M’s, chocolate chips or mini marshmallows for more texture.
  • Flavor twist: Try white chocolate and crushed peppermint for a wintery version.
  • Protein boost: Mix in a handful of roasted nuts or protein powder.

Pro tips for the best Muddy Buddies

Want to make your batch extra delicious? Keep these simple tips in mind:

  • Use gentle mixing: When coating the cereal with chocolate, stir gently to avoid crushing the pieces. A silicone spatula works best!
  • Coat in batches: If you want an even powdered sugar coating, shake the cereal in small batches rather than all at once. This ensures each piece gets fully covered.
  • Let them cool completely: Allow the Muddy Buddies to cool in the bowl after mixing. You can also spreading them on a baking sheet, which can prevent clumping and keep them perfectly crisp.

If you bring this classic recipe from Tastes Better from Scratch to your next party, we guarantee they won’t last long. If you want to make them ahead of time, they will stay fresh for up to a week at room temperature.

Ingredients:

  • 8 cups Chex cereal (rice Chex, corn Chex or a combination)
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1½ cups semisweet chocolate chips
  • ¾ cup creamy peanut butter
  • 4 Tbs. salted butter, or add a pinch salt if using unsalted butter
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract

Directions:

  • Total Time: 15 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings
  1. Measure cereal into a large bowl, then set aside. Divide powdered sugar between two ziplock bags, adding 1 cup to each bag. Set aside.
  2. In a saucepan add chocolate chips, butter and peanut butter (and salt, if using unsalted butter). Then, cook over medium-low heat, stirring, until melted and smooth. (Don’t over-heat it, just warm it until melted and smooth.)
  3. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Then, pour over the prepared cereal in the bowl and stir to coat evenly. Allow to cool for a few minutes.
  4. Divide coated cereal between the two ziplock bags with powdered sugar, seal the bag and shake to coat the cereal.

How to store Muddy Buddies

Muddy Buddies can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week (if they last that long!). For longer storage, keep them in the fridge or freezer.

Pro tip: Frozen Muddy Buddies are extra crunchy and just as delicious!
